My twenty five minute presentation will be on Interventional Neuroradiology. At Westmead, we're pioneering the technology, in that we have a hybrid operating theatre. We can do minor procedures, as pictured below, or we can convert to a full blown open operation without moving the patient. A first in Australia.
Essentially, its about fixing brain aneurysms and strokes using tiny wires and catheters, using dyes and xray, and going in through the groin via a tiny nick in the skin, to avoid craniotomy (busting your skull open to scoop out brain and clots)
So in a nutshell:
I work in a place that looks like this:

(most days... not every day)
I look at blood vessels in your head

when we find an aneurysm, we try to fix it.

like this.
if we're successful, you're treated, and can go home the following day.
and if we're unsuccessful, either of the two can happen:

Bust your skull open, hopefully don't fcuk something else up in the process. Stay in hospital for at least four weeks, with months and months of rehab.
