Go here to your user control panel (or click on the arrow up the top next to your name, and select 'My settings'. Click on the 'Forums' tab, then select 'Manage Watched Topics'. You can then tick the box and then change the frequency of the subscriptions.

I want instant email notifications, but for example can i get 1 "general thread" Email notification until the next time i look at the thread, and not one for every single post? or cant it do that like that old one?

You can select from one of the following. I would suspect that the closest to what you're asking for is 'Delayed Email notification'. Hope this helps.

# No Email Notification This option will not send out any email notification, but will retain the topic in your subscriptions panel.

# Delayed Email Notification This option will send out a notification if a reply has been made and you're not active on the board.

# Immediate Email Notification This option will send out a notification immediately after a reply has been made, regardless of your activity.

# Daily Email Digest This option will send out a daily digest showing all new replies for the day

# Weekly Email Digest This option will send out a weekly digest showing all new replies for the week
