My what an eventful night last night was. Heading to g/f's parents place in her Astra for dinner, dark and very rainy, hear a pretty loud thud from under the car and something go flying out to the forward drivers side of the car. Engine within a few seconds starts with some pretty epic TAPPA TAPPA TAPPA sound, pulled off the side of the road and had the motor shut down in less than 30 seconds.

Didn't have a torch or anything and it was PISSING with rain so called RAC, they came out and checked the oil level --- nothing. Bone dry.

He checked the oil filter - it's loose. Fuck.

He pulled the oil filter off and we pretty quickly saw where the 5ltr's of oil went.

That's what I would have thought, yet there's no damage to the front of the car at all. I didn't see what it was we hit, but it was very dark and very rainy. Perfect night for sitting on the side of the road for 1.5 hours.

It was towed to a holding yard where they will assess it. The RAC guy reported it as impact damage, so if the motor is cactus it'll be an insurance claim for sure.

I'm wary of lots of things being forked. I didn't even clearly see what it was we hit, it could have been anything - but whatever it was, it looked like it was metal.

Will let insurance assessor's do their thing and see what they come back with.

Could have been a drunk robot passed out on the highway? These things can happen.

Drunk robot kills it!!

Woah!!

Just curious (for those who trust the oil light), did the oil light come on before the "tappa tap" noise started? or even at all before you shut it down?

It was either check engine or the oil light that came on, yes.

Although I was a little preoccupied with cutting across traffic to get the car off the road.

Girl's dad is going back there today to see if he can find anything on the side of the road capable of doing this sort of damage.

Poor little Astra.

They did just choose the Outback over the Outlander/Sata Fe - though he said it was the ugliest car in New Zealand. I would take issue with that.

redneckframe1991 the reason the engine blew was he kept going left which caused oil strarvation on the right side.
