I am looking at replacing my engine in my 06 forester. I may have blown the head. It was a 2.5 N/A.
I am currently on my Ps so I can't actually have a turbo engine. Do you know how feasable it would be to buy a wrx engine, remove the turbo until I am on my open liscense, and then put it back on. Because it looks like it would be cheaper in the long run.

It will be cheaper In the long run to repair the EJ25 head gasket. Drive it nicely, maintain it properly and save the rest of your money to buy a wrx or a XT forester.

To run a turbo engine you’ll need the turbo crossmember, turbo exhaust manifold and down pipe, engine management and loom, not to mention the actual turbo engine. The dashboard will have to come out (generally) to do the wiring mods. Turbo wiring loom will need to be cut down or integrated into the forester’s wiring loom.

To “disconnect” the turbo you’ll need the NA exhaust (easy), NA intake plumbing and to plug a series of oil and coolant passages that service the turbo. Then you’ll have a sluggish engine (compared to what you have now) to drive with until you’re off your P’s. You might have to run on 98 RON fuel in that time too.

Better off saving and buying a factory turbo then put your efforts into performance mods to make it go even better.

Cheers

As Bennie has said above,

To repair your head gaskets should cost no more than 3.5 to 4K.

Unless you really overheated your engine big time.

A wrx engine conversion will cost 10K and that depends what year/model the donor engine and parts come from.

For 3.5-4k you'd want a reco'd motor! How mechanically minded are you? get on partsouq.com for all the parts you need (do some research on which turbo or STI head gaskets would fit your motor), i'd even re-use your head bolts.

Also download a workshop manual, they have almost every bit of info you'd need.
