So I’ve been looking for an daily for a little while and since the corolla is now a cube I decided to go check out this Subaru Sherpa on the weekend. The guy wanted $2500 for it which wasn’t going to happen. Martinez and I took it for a test drive to see how she preforms and I was pleasantly surprised. Once it got going it was actually quite nice to drive. The brakes leave a little to be desired but it still pulls up to a stop well enough. After chatting with old mate and offering $900, we agreed that $1600 was a price we could both live with.

I haven’t had time to have a good look over the whole thing but initially it looks to be in very good condition. Paint is in great condition, has a few small knocks but nothing major. It also has a sunroof!!.

Not sure what the plans for it are at this stage. I was thinking restore it back to as new condition could be cool.

Any suggestions? I like the wrx seats in Ben's Fiori project so that might be one of the first things to get upgraded. I've still got my heritage seats somewhere so i might put them in...

Anyway here are some pics...

Sherpa!

The Hiace feels left out now...

Inside she has all the mod cons like am radio, glove box and ashtray

Sunroof!!

Posted Image

Plenty of room in the boot but not sure where the surfboard is going to go yet?

Posted Image

The EK23 2 cylinder could reach 125kmph max when new off the showroom floor. In 2009 the Sherpa still has it

Update: 15/11/2009

Got a new head unit installed on the weekend. Most head units are to deep to mount in the dash where the original AM radio is installed so I was planning on mounting it on the shelf underneath the glove box but after some f**king around we decided it was best mounted with a bracket under the radio in the centre of the console. The single 2” speaker in the dash still pumps out the sound so that’s staying as is for the moment...

Update: 19/11/2009

Got the guys at Cromer Racing to put on a nice little chrome sports muffler tip today and also did a basic service. They did a service on the carby as well as adjusted the brakes and replaced a CV boot. She goes like a little champ now!

Also tried finding out about lowered springs but not having much luck. The only mob who really seem to want to know about it are King Springs who said they can re-set the stock springs to whatever height I want. They said they have done three sets for Subaru Sherpa’s since 1987 so it’s not spring they plan on producing as an off the shelf item

Update: 21/11/2009

Went up to Taleb Tyres this morning just to see what/if they had any rims that would suit.To my surprise there was a pretty cool set of 14"s that for $499 including Yokohama Tyres i felt i couldn't pass up. They fill out the arches much more am now undecided if i should get the springs compressed or leave as is.

Update: 25/11/2009

Got the windows tinted today. As the Sherpa is registered with the RTA as a commercial vehicle I was able to get Solar Tint’s 5% Onyx on the rear windows and standard 35% on the front. It’s really starting to come together now...

btw i was telling Ben from Solar Tint about Suby Club etc and he was saying that if Sydney members wanted to do a group buy he would hook us up a good price.

Update 23/12/09

Went to Wakefield today for an open track day. What an experience that was. 127kmph top speed, rear drum brakes and 5.5" wide wheels. The Sherpa was not designed with motorsports in mind. Was a lot of fun and finished up at the track without incident...

Then on the M5 on the way home we hit some traffic. And i was hit by Andy (And70)...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Nothing major really but i can't open the boot which is a pain in the ass. Gonna run this through Andy's insurance so hopefully i'll get his all fixed up fairly quickly...

Update 30/12/09

So today i received a $1500 cheque from GIO ! ! !

I've been trying to source a rear bar all week with no luck until TH37OY alerted me to an ebay auction for another red sherpa.

$800 and it was a done deal. Still had change so i bought a Nardi Torino steering wheel from a GC8 STI RA (has the all important STI logo) and a Saas Boss Kit for her.

Posted Image

I'll pillage the ebay one for the good stuff and swap it all over when i get a chance

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

I think i might even install my old catch can for shits and giggles (and some bling)

Update 08/04/10

Finally swapped my front and rear bars over today. Bother are much straighter than the original bars. The rear was a pain in ass to swap over as some of the bolts had been covered over after the rear ender. Nothing a good kicking couldn't fix mind you.

The pallet and cardboard were my panel beating shop. There is a small ding on the replacement bar that I tried to knock out. Unsuccessfully. It’s straighter than the old one at least and the boot now opens and closes which is the main thing.

Aaron and I were talking last night and I think we’re going to looking into giving the little sherpa some added boost. Anyone got a primary from a GT or B4 they don’t need?

This is a very easily answered post Aek. Get an LX FWD gearbox and a EJ20R, tuck it in the back, and voila, track heaven RWD beast weighing no more than 8-900kg.
As Tony Montana would say:
In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

Ah Frank! Haha you always know what to say :P

I’ve had the thing two bloody days and your the third person to recommend a rear mounted EJ20...i didn’t realise this answer was so obvious haha

Yeah Shiv I’m happy to be driving this instead of that seca!

Nah no taco. On the speedo around the boarder there are the numbers 1,2,3 & 4 which as far as I can work out are the recommended gear when cursing at the corresponding speed

Heritage seats? Leather?

Wanna make some money? I want some for my GX!

Oh for sure mate. If your interested pm me. It’s the fronts only. Seats are in good condition with no rips or tears.

First post updated with some new mods!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________

So I entered the Sherpa in it’s first motorsports event last weekend, the PIF annual charity rally. It wasn’t a speed rally, more of an orienteering challenge where we had to use clues to get us from the start of each stage to the next check point. The rally was set over three stages of which stage time completion wise we came 1st in the first stage, 10th in the second and 3rd in the last. By overall time we finished 5th but we dropped some point as we missed some of our clues which left us in 10th place over all.

It was a great day and fun to get out and tussle with some performance vehicles such as a Ferrari 430, Porsche GT3, GTR, Audi TT, STI’s, EVO’s, Cobra, M3, RS4 etc. The Sherpa was chopping everyone...

I’ll try and get some of the proper rally pics up once they get uploaded.

Now with it's improved performance from the STi radiator cap can it now do FWD skids?

Love the new rims Aek! It adds to its gutsy 'can do' attitude B) Had no idea you could register it as a commercial light van haha....thats awesome, the tint will give it some serious attitude. ps. I was very impressed with its effort in the rally I read about somewhere on this forum. Should be Subaru's next WRC car :P
