about a week before hvc, my temp spiked. got it home. checked the rad next morning. took 3.5l of coolant :/ hasnt done it since :S, coolant levels are normal and ive done over 1200km. i dont know how long it was running hot for before my mate pointed it out. i dont think it would have been long at all...either way, i think the HG is fine. touch wood!
Exactly what happened to my bus, and that was a head gasket.

i drive a brand new elantra for work... it is always satisfying to jump back in my 11yr old GT or 12 year old B4 and drive home... only good thing about it is blutooth built in!!
1st 1990 Nissan Pulsar Q. What a rocket!
2nd: Gen 2 RX... Loved and lost...
3rd: 1995 Toyota Corolla which drove from Cairns to Bunbury in 5 Days! 6610km!!! didnt miss a beat.
4th: Gen1 GX bought for $500 went like stink... looked like what caused the stink
5th: More civilized now... with a Heritage Wagon... now gone...
6th Mitsubishi KJ Verada..."its nothing like a suby" now gone...
7th: 2002 B4 Liberty TT....

None what so ever, I had been up the snow before embarking on a 2:30hr drive home.What happened after the temp spike bump?
What were the other signs
Realised the temp was up, limped it 15mins to home. Filled it up with a few litres of coolant.
It never over heated again, however, I would notice probably half a litre drop in coolant from a 50min drive.
Compression test showed nothing, no obvious signs of oil and coolant mixing.
Pulled the engine out because I was sick of it, and i was kind of happy to find the leaking gasket. Otherwise id still have no idea what it was.
*no tests could 100% conclude it was a head gasket.
*a very slow leak only noticeable on 30min+ drives.
