Aah fair enough, I'll just save up my monies and get me a synology, or qnap one.
You have a computer. If it does not have an onboard raid option (ie intel ICHwhatever they're up to) or similar, get a cheapish raid controller - Rocket Raid cards are quite cheap and work well. Get a 5 1/4" drive bay converters if you're limited with internal 3 1/2 bays, add HDD's and you're done.
Windows can deal with most of your needs that would be done by modern NAS

I think that's probably me done with the modifications, I invested about $40 in stickers and it's paid off, it was either that or a STi conversion, but I don't regret my decision.
