You will notice that your idle speed revs are very high and there is nothing (legally) that you can do about it. It's against the law to fiddle with the engine management system to lower the idle speed.wow very interesting as i did not know that about reverse. Just so u know it was at 1.8k when i started it but it was slowly dropping. I am going to keep an eye on it very carefully for the next couple days and ill let you know what the revs are sitting on.
The Imprezas before 2008 did not have this problem because their idle speeds hot or cold are much lower.
After 2008 when the next generation Imprezas came out (the ones the same shape as ours) their idle speeds were greatly increased to comply with emission control standards. They use higher idle revs to burn off toxic gases that the exhaust produces.
Yes , that's right.Ps what i engine braking?? i am assuming it I using the gears to slow down?

It was good on my Liberty auto!I'm pretty sure engine braking on an auto box will be pretty non-existant.
But not on the Impreza I have now, because in order to have engine braking the idle speed has to be low. That applies to a manual or auto.

Cool..........its good to see someone on here with the same car
Well, I'm comparing the idle revs to my older Liberty.I have never really looked twice at the idol revs but they have never seemed too high to me.
1.8K is far too high for me.When i jumped in my car this morning, initially for a second or 2 the reves where just above 2K, then they slowly went down to approx 1.8K
Also engine braking is not as good because the revs are too high at idle. When I go down a hill and take my foot off the throttle , the car won't slow down with engine braking alone and I have to apply the brakes more often then I has to with my old Liberty.
There's many other things I don't like about the high revs in idle.
When you try and put your car in reverse with you manual transmission, the revs at idle are too high so the syncros in your gearbox are working harder to try and engage reverse. That's why you find it hard to engage reverse. This would not happen if your idle revs dropped down to a sensible 600 rpms.

A thread going for high revs?Just had a quick look and it doesn't look like he has a thread going??
Thanks,, I'll PM him. Here's his profile though if you want to shoot him a PM.
Auto.....aprox 2,300 when cold.....1,200 when hot. All new Subarus after 2008 have high idle speed revs.Might be worth answering the other guy's questions too... how high is too high and what trans have you got? Could help with the diagnosis
And thanks for the welcome to the forum!!!
