If you want to save some money you could just replace the boot if that is the problem, however there may already be damage to the shaft, in which case you'll have to replace the whole thing.

My car had this problem and I only just fixed it yesterday. I bought 2 new front drive shafts from Repco for $230. They are pretty simple to replace, only takes about an hour for both if you have a good rattle gun.

An hour... you went well. I spent well over an hour trying to split the ball joint apart on the control arm.

Nice looking Foz, sucks to hear about all the issues though. Sounds like you have good plans for it.
