It is going well. Although my fuel economy tanked on the last fill up. I roughly worked it out to be about 10.5L/100km. A small bit of towing but mainly flogging uphills on the weekend and probably going a bit too hard in traffic on the way to work.
The wood collecting brumby you’re after, road going or paddock basher?

With 2 kids under 3, my best option is a dual cab ute, but thats a long way off. The brumby would be the stop gap between now and when I can afford to buy a bigger ute.
Seeing you do what you do with this one is fuelling my want to get one...

Ben

Asking as I have a brumby that has potential, its rough but runs - but its also not currently a road going vehicle without some work done to it.
Anyway, youll find the right one for you, just keep looking! Theyre extremely basic and the 4 speed makes them feel like a highway tractor.
Let me know if you need to know anything about them

Had some issues with power steering fluid being uber low too. Ive filled it with some penrite stuff that has the additive that does stuff to seals to make them do their job again. It seems to be holding up for now. Time will tell on this front.
Other than that Redback keeps cruising along. Between playing plumber at my folks place the other day it also did some farm stuff:

Needless to say, performance sucked. It felt worse with just the trailer but I think this was a mindset as seeing the load and feeling more weight I wasnt expecting as much from the Brumby and I held gears longer with a lighter throttle. It sat under 100km/h on the way home for the most part due to undulating terrain.
I had a couple of people comment on my Brumby throughout the day - this seems to be a more commonly occurring thing as time goes on. One notable instance, I had a young girl, probably mid to late teens, stick her head out the door of the car she was in, in the pouring rain, to tell me she liked my car. She probably had no idea what it was but I guess she found it cute. I can live with that

Got a few things to check into before the big run - rear brakes & bearings (check both, replace as needed), tappet clearances, and maybe powder coating the rims to make them more presentable. Need to properly look into this one and get cracking!
Word on the grapevine says there’s over a dozen Brumby’s going this year - this is how I thought it would’ve been last year. I hope it’s true there’s that many coming!

Not surprised on the brumby front, the recent build by Marty and crew will have helped the following some I'd say!

Keen for some more pics man!
Not surprised on the brumby front, the recent build by Marty and crew will have helped the following some I'd say!
Not a pic of the brumby this time around, but it’s ABOUT the brumby…
And last year I thought all the brumby nuts would show up to Subinats - but alas, there were four in the show and shine (mine was the biggest nugget) and two in the carpark that we saw. It’ll be an interesting trip knowing how many are making it this year!
In prep Redback is copping some love - it’s a bit dependent on a few things: money, weather, other priorities with house/family.
Plan is to give the bullbar a lick of paint to make it all one colour. Finish isn’t expected to be great, I just want to get rid of the rust patches for a while…
The rims will get a coat of paint. Question is, which colour to go for?

This image is a good representation of the actual colours for once! Which would you choose?
Bullbar - satin/gloss/hammer tone black? I’ll be painting around my stickers as there’s one in particular that I can’t get a replacement for anymore. Again, not going for show quality.
And thoughts on some bright green caliper and drums for shits and giggles?
I’m keen to see what others reckon I should go for in all of those departments.
Lastly I’m finally installing a stez. Nothing over the top but it does make me edgy about someone breaking into the brumby when thinking about having a proper headunit etc. Speakers will just be some 2way 6 inch jobbies until I can make my proper custom door cards with the 6x9s that are lined up.
This happened about three weeks ago too. I don’t know the exact number of kms on this brumby as the original odometer didn’t work as I found out after getting it rego’d. Can’t complain, it was a rolling shell when I got it!

Itll be nice to have some tunes that arent coming from a portable speaker, and some comms with other vehicles on the road. I might end up in a Brumby convoy around the 14th
Im looking at swapping the rear brakes to discs with a set Ive got at my folks place. I just need to work out when to get them so Im not wasting the weekend work time on the Brumby. Ive got two weekends before we leave for Subinats on the 14th of Sept. And I have a lot of painting to do in that time.
Cant wait to get my wheels back!

Brakes - I'd stick with a colour that suits your current scheme, I think the green will stand out, but not in a good way. Definitely wait until you've got the rear discs on first though. No point painting something thats being removed shortly anyways!
Stezza is always good!

Paints and colour choice - always an anxiety inducing experience!
The wheels are already in the process of being painted - in the pearl white. Now I’ve read your feedback, I’m hoping the pearl white with the depth of colour it has, I’m hoping it’ll really pop against the red. It looked like a much healthier colour compared to the bright white. The pearl white colour didn’t have that usual sheen effect that pearl paints typically have. Time will tell now!
The bullbar - I’ve never had any success with hammer tone, not that I’ve used it much especially recently! The choice of satin or matte black, I think I’d go with satin as from memory it’s not as flat as the matte black.
The green calipers are meant to be loud and leery in a way, it’s for shits and giggles - my brumby isn’t by any means fast and the brakes certainly aren’t sports brakes by any stretch of the imagination! Plus I can’t think of a good colour that will go with the red of the body colour and white of the rims other than a bright green (dark green is a no go!). Also read many posts online that swear by a primer (maybe high temp, would have to check again), colour (not high temp!) then a high temp clear coat - “same as the day I applied it three years ago”. I’m skeptical but also curious. She’s no show car and a quick lick of paint in a carpark the night before to tidy it up could be the patch job for the show the next day if it flakes on the trip up… it also might not happen in the time frame I’ve got to work with…
We’ll see. Thanks for replying Ben!

Pearl white imo for the bull bar. Would look very 90s with the matched wheels on the red
I wouldnt worry about the stereo. Not really a big ticket item to steal these days. Especially not a single din basic thing.
Personally id just leave the brakes black. Bright green doesnt really look good on anything these days (looking at you MY18+ STi brembos). Local car place like supercheap will sell high temp "caliper" paint

alloy bar - my vote would be black of some sort, or strip it back (possible?) and clearcoat.
White will get messy with bugs, and wrinkle silver, as you say, never comes out right.

Been looking back through some of this thread. Great read and looks like you've been having some good times.. Had no idea about the MCM experience, awesome stuff! I'm not as up to date as I used to be with them. Will have to check out your ep.

The green I really want to use is “Kawasaki Green” - but I can’t get it in a spray pack that I would prefer as I have zero spray painting equipment. And it’s very different to the Brembo brake green I’ve seen before, that looks almost yellow-green to me - spew emoji would be good right about now. I’m also not taking this too seriously, hence the thoughts of an outrageous colour on the calipers that I hope will be on all four corners by the end of this weekend. If the colour is no good I’ll wear it for the time being then change it to something more sensible later some day…
Duncan, the bullbar is steel. So no sanding it back for clear coat over alloy! A satin black would probably work best. Taping over the stickers will be the hardest part as I don’t want to reapply them namely because the one it came with can’t be replaced.
Ads! I haven’t seen you around here in a while! Good to hear from you! Yeah last year was a blast and a really good distraction from the teaching environment I was working in. New setting this year which is so much better! “Highlighter yellow” I think is my back up colour if I can’t find a green I’m happy with. We’ll see how it goes as weather is going to play a huge part in painting in the lead up for the event. I’ve got two weekends to get it done!
With the slow snail pace EJ conversion, my plan was to do the intake and the cam covers in the matching green of the calipers. Originally I didn’t have the caliper paint on the radar but I figure why not…
I’m hoping tomorrow I get to see the rims in their new coat of paint. It’ll be good to see them all as one colour without any rusty white paint!

The Subaru/Liberty itch has come back so considering my options..
Glad to hear things are better for you this year, may it continue! I'm keen to see an outrageous colour, hopefully you can get it sorted in time.
All the best for the to do list!

On the outrageous colour, if I cant find a green that satisfies my wants, Ill go a very bright yellow. And having seen the rims this arvo I think its going to go quite well with the pop/loudness.
Before and after. You wouldnt think these are the same rims, theyre like new now.

Its one of those things that now its done I wish I did it earlier - but I didnt have the motivation to do it or find the funds to do it with.
Hoping to pick them up with tyres fitted tomorrow. And Ill have to scrub those as they look like dirty rubbish near that fresh paint!
Im excited about this but am now worried that the rest of the suspension will look like shite.
Meh, one step at a time!
Thats it for now. Cant wait to pick them up with the tyres refitted. Im not sure that theyll go straight on the brumby until things are painted. Im now thinking rims and backing plates etc will need a lick of green too. Nah Barbs Im just kidding mate, maybe a black to keep the usual rust at bay. Any tips on paining disc hub and outer edge would be appreciated.

Therefore Motivation = d I guess… but you are correct!
Paints collected. Can’t find a green I’m keen on yet. Seen some good yellows as back up options.

So Monday will see me pick up the paint and a set of braided brake hoses for the rear discs to go with the braided hose kit for the brumby I’ve got to put on.
That’s about it for now. I was excited about the paint colour. And I’ve decided not to reveal how it all comes together until after Subinats - cruel I know but I think it’ll be better this way!
I’m thinking of removing the front calipers to paint them since I’ll have to remove the brake lines to swap the braided lines on anyway.
