Not yet.

If it's a CVT (even with step logic) then the chances of me owning one are slim at best. Combine that with the horror stories I keep hearing regarding late model diesels then the chances fall to zero.

The idea of a patrol diesel is that fuel is readily available in the middle of nowhere and they are not common rail, so will cope better and more easily fixed if they gulp dodgy fuel. Plus they will go places an OBK or Foz can't and they are less likely to be shaken to bits on bad roads.

Yeah, Nissan or Toyota 4wd is a good choice for when you need parts in Fuckknows. I'd lean towards Toyota as they are used by Govt and Mines outback, therefore more parts availability.

I wonder how far I could take the Foz offroad...

After spending six years (a long time ago I'll admit) working on 4WDs, mostly Landcruiser and Hilux, my choice would be the Nissan. When the odd Patrol came in there was little else to do on them, unlike the Landcruisers that always needed transfer and diff rebuilds plus swivel housing overhauls and burnt valves on the 3F petrols. Could never understand why the boss hated Nissans so much when, to me, they appeared better built.

I think a Foz with a lift, decent tyres and a way of locking at least the centre diff would be quite surprising offroad. Shiv has done some good things to his OBK, so he might have some ideas.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Hmmm, would be interesting if that's still the case Jase, Toyota pride themselves on their 'Aussie Outback' durability, that being said, Patrols are a hell of a machine.

Yeah there's some nice off road Foz's around, I probably wouldn't replace the bumper bars like Shiv, but am looking at a set of 16s with A/Ts to swap over to for camping, Tyres give a tiny bot of lift without the need for a lift kit.

Plus one on the ranger, have one myself with almost 40k on it, plus work have them. My only gripe is the gay washer jets. They've gone over to the new spray style, rather than the old 2 jets of water, and the very bottom of the drivers side windscreen doesn't get wet, so the wipers just smudge the windscreen. Unless of course you got the 2.2l td model, those things are gutless pieces of crap.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it. In process of being stripped and sold off.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon. Scrapped.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. Scrapped.

MY13 BRG, current daily, very nice to drive, small mods to make it even nicer again.

And home.

I am getting into the habit of coming home mentally exhausted over physically exhausted. It's a good feeling at the moment but I'm sure the novelty will soon wear off.
