Rust issue's apparently, below the rear window.

Yep, along with rear quarters, sills, doors, lower front guards, floors if the windscreen leaked, around the tail lights plus anywhere else there is steel.

XC's were the worst. They were slow to sell so the bodies were stored outside until orders were placed. Edsel Ford II came up with the idea of the Cobra to shift them. All Cobras were built June 1978, hence they all have similar chassis numbers that incorporate the build number.
