Even the fat ones Adam?
Work has given me a Surface Pro to evaluate as a training tool. Seems OK but in my experience students tend to see these gadgets as a social connectivity tool, rather than something associated with work. One advantage is it will reduce our printing cost.
What do you blokes think? If you had to do instructor led training (classroom, PowerPoint, work tasks, discussion), would you prefer a tablet, or a work book and a pen?

From experience Jase, tablets/laptops aren't that great in learning info in a classroom.
My course Is interactive, and it's good to use a laptop to look up info as the tutor talks, and to also bring up last week's lecture etc. but a pen and paper is always handy. Sometimes my classes will require us to split up and compile a powerpoint or report on our laptops, and we will need to be searching the web frantically looking for research to support our ideas. but this might not be needed in a vocational course.
I also find I write too many notes when I have a laptop, which is shit because then I have to sift through them later to work out what is worth studying and what is peripheral info.
The laptop would be good in your field for blokes to bring up schematics while you are talking, and they could rotate mechanical drawings to get a greater understanding. But in that case a real engine etc will do the trick better 9/10 times. I guess if the kids had the surface pros they could record your talks or take photos of the work you're showing them.
TLDR; Laptops are good for conveying visual info to students, but not necessary for note taking.
Also I have a surface pro for work, it's shit compared to my Mac.

Thanks for your comments Niko.
In no way can a laptop/tablet replace hands on tasks, that's a given.
You addressed one of my key concerns regarding note taking electronically. It seems to me that the device dictates the method, whereas a pen is more fluid. The other thing I have noticed is that a book provides more of a 'helicopter' style view of the information where the tablet only permits a focused view.

ive also found that when you are writing physically with pen and paper, you absorb the information way more than if you do typing. typing is almost second nature to alot of people now and you just dont know what youre saying - ive gone back and re read stuff ive typed in notes that make absolutely no sense after ive done it, where as notes ive hand written made complete sense and triggered my memory on points covered.

Thanks Mark, noted.
This method involves the 'book' loaded onto the device as a PDF, and participants can 'write' notes or sketch over the top with a stylus pen.

Sketching is key, I waste so much time trying to illustrate in my notes using symbols.
Mark is right, when you type notes you have fork all idea about what you've written. When you write them you can remember a bit more.

Haha, a Mini is like a small 2 door Foz Shaz...so you'd still be swapping for a Foz.
