Hey Suby Fam,

Bit of an odd question, I'm looking at buying a car from Hobart and thinking of taking it back to Sydney. The route would be to drive to Devonport and take it on the spirit of Tasmania to Melbourne and drive from Melbourne home to Sydney. Think that would be the cheapest with jet stars $35 flights at the moment Lol.

I got a couple of quotes from different places but they're around $1200-$1300 to put it on a truck and send it up. Has anyone done anything similar and could recommend a logistics company?

Next question is, if I was to drive it, what would be the process? Drive it back on Tasmanian registration and then get it blue slipped and regoed in NSW?

Would I need to get insurance for the drive home?

Is there any other ways of getting it across the water? That would be cheaper/better than Spirit of Tasmania?

I was looking at the UVP (unregistered vehicle permit) but I'm think as I'm a P-Plater (I'll be getting my black license in the next few months) and the car has some modification (In particular a big gross exhaust) I would get pulled over by cops the whole way home, and is like to avoid them, not that I'm doing anything wrong (well exhaust may be illegal) but it's just potential trouble I don't want.

Do you put any plates on the car when you have a UVP? I'm not sure how it works really.

Or if anyone has done similar could you give me an insight on how it went, or things to would do next time?

Thanks, Pat

I've just shipped a car across as freight. If you can it's a pot load cheaper to fly down, drive to Devonport, jump on the ferry as a passenger (cheapest option is a cruise seat and they only do night trips at this time of year) with a car, then drive from there to where ever you need to go.

Tassy rego would be the way to go, otherwise with the right permit you could do it on the one permit rather than getting one for each state - you'll have to look up state regs to find out what they want etc

You can email the spirit for further info, the freight guy I emailed all week was great to deal with.

Alternatively there's truckit.net that might be an option, otherwise put in for a free quote with different providers and see what comes up ;)

Cheers

From memory, the state in which the permit needs to be acquired is the state where the car will be registered.

Call the RMS and tell them the exact circumstances and they will sort you out.
I found them quite helpful.

And for transporting a car, I used a company called door to door cars. They pick the car up from where it is and drop it right to your door. They organise it all. Mine was towed to the truck, trucked to a depot then towed to my house.

They were several hundred dollars cheaper than their competition and cost me under a grand from Avernel in Vic to the Central coast.

I shipped m Forester from Gold Coast to Hobart for $1300 witH CEVA logistocs

If it's coming from a Car yard, get them to book it as they'll get a cheaper rate

Have the seller cancel the Tassie Rego.
Get a Tasmanian Unrego'd permit (28 days)
Wait for the truck to arrive.
Pick up your car

Yep,
adds a good $300+ to transport a car across.
They are usually unloaded at the wharf, driven on, driven off and loaded onto a different truck for the rest of the journey.

Rough budget for driving:

flight down $70

120l of fuel - $200

ferry - $250 (overnight -- fresh start in the morning in Melb)

one nights accomodation (Syd/Melb) $50+

meals $50

large bag of snakes, coffees and a couple of V's $20

~$650

mucho cheaper than a truck.. but what's your time worth ?

btw - I found a great pub to stop off Melb/Syd.  Try the Culcairn hotel.  Simple 1-bed rooms are $50/night, there's a big bar downstairs, plus a bistro.

Well duncanm just pretty much summed it up.

I got a flight for $40 with Jetstar.

Gonna say 2-3 tanks around $200

Spirit of Tasmania around $300 (but my mate will pay for his ticket) Sleep on the ship and get up and head straight back and not stay a night at a hotel.

$100 to survive food and drinks etc.

Around $600-$700 all up.

Obviously trying to organise insurance now for the drive home. Wonder how I'll go with that.

oh - the other plus with the pub is they have secure/out of sight (*) parking out back

(*) - well, as secure as you get in a country town.  Parked up to back of the pub in their acre lot with a locked chainlink fence around it.

If it wasn't winter I'd suggest driving up via the snowy mountains. Epic trip. Worth it :)

Fly down and drive back is the best and funnest option. I did this with my Forester - 8pm flight from Syd to Bris. Was driving the car at 9:15pm. Back in bed by 6am the next morning. A second driver made it much easier as we just drove all night haha. Best way to get a good feel for your new car ;)

As for rego/insurance - get a cover note/new policy for the car before you go anywhere as you would with any new car purchase. Doesn't matter where the car is rego'd or whose name at this stage. All they record is the plate number which can be changed at any time.

Drive back to NSW.

Call up your greenslip insurer and acquire greenslip. This has to be done over the phone as all online quotes require NSW rego number.

Go to approved mechanic for a BLUEslip.

Take greeny and bluey to RMS and acquire rego with new NSW plates.

Done
