Bet you weren't expecting this now were you?

After deciding it was a good idea to hit someone's Mazda 3 in the ass and write off my wagon id spend 2-3 years rebuilding i was left with some time to think.

Obviously I wanted another car and im not done fiddling with Subarus just yet. Another wagon of course but I didnt feel the need for another gen 2, coupled with the fact that RX shells are very thin on the ground, especially in good condition and in not shit colours. I decided it was time to move up/down/sideways and into a gen 3.

Originally the plan was to get a nice one cut up in japan, source a local shell, and do the swap. Due to reasons Import Monster were unable to provide the service for 3-4 months (at least) and I didnt really want to wait that long.

A few days before this news a Legacy popped up in QLD for sale, that truth be told ticked all the boxes

  • White
  • Rev D-E
  • Manual
  • Legacy
  • Not forked
  • Personal Import

So with nothing happening on the import front and money burning a hole in my wallet I sent the seller a message...

2 weeks later we have this

5P48dwL.png
p0uc6pW.png

Noice. Its not 100% perfect.

  • Scuff on the rear bumper
  • Spats and skirts need painting
  • Drivers seat is forked
  • Single turbo conversion but still running the TT ecu and tune  nea.gif
  • Its in QLD (being looked after by Shaz)
  • NSW has forked it and I have to get it trucked down

Other than that it should do nicely.

My plans are basically the same as my gen 2. Nice compfy street car that can be driven in the twistys without falling over, and as much turbo succ as possible.

Ive already started buying a few things for it without even having possession of the car lol.

I will post some in-depth pics when i finally get the car in a few weeks

Sounds good mate. Your standard of “a few issues” is very different to mine! Each to their own and I do appreciate a neat and tidy looking vehicle, I’m just yet to get there with one :P

I bet you can’t wait for it to arrive! From what I’ve heard there’s a huge backlog of vehicles to be transported from qld to Vic after the last school holidays with families travelling back through NSW - no guarantee getting into Vic so many opted to fly home and transport their car (and caravan). All the best with getting it here!

That engine management setup, will it require a full require or just repin the current loom for the single turbo ecu? How long until your engine ends up in there?

Cheers

Bennie

Yes i reckon its gonna be a few weeks to get it here unfortunately.

If im lucky i can flash a WRX ROM onto the Legacy ecu and itll just work if not a WRX ecu is only a few pins different so loom can stay in the car thankfully.

My engine has been sold to a mate. Only the short block would have worked in it being phase 2 and its sale went towards affording the car in the first place

Nice dude, only issue I see is you've bought auto trims for a manual car. Reverse and 5th will be painful to get with the auto trim.

Can't wait to see what you do with this thing!

From memory, there shouldn't be an issue putting a similar vintage program onto the 01 ecu. They are tunable to that degree. You're probably better off just taking it to somewhere you trust and get them to tune it rather than just flashing the WRX program to it.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Nice one!

Hope you get it soon, must be frustrating not being able to make a start on it.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Trust me, it’s even worse when it’s in the driveway and you can’t work on it for one reason or another (without stepping on ppl’s toes, such as your significant other’s, especially once you have kids!).

At least you’ll have time to plan for your maintenance work - cam cover gaskets etc, plenty of time to order the parts now and have them here when the Subi arrives!

Cheers

This one will be a bit more spread out and doing small things over time.

With my gen 2 I could do big chunks at a time.

Have some regular house savings going these days so cant commit the same amount of money, at least this time im starting with a running driving vehicle lol

Not sure about the ECU -- if no luck with flashing, there's a mob in Canada that have a relatively cheap solution to make the TT ECU's tunable.

They even have a single-turbo tune ready to go: https://lambdatuning...urbo-operation/

Is it the electric gubbins in the driver's seat that is forked?    You can ditch all that heavy shit and rebuild the squishy bits onto a standard manual seat frame.

That's a shame. Looks like the rest of the seats are in good nic.

Black leather door cars and rear seat sorted.
VSVvzgF.png
Door cards might need some mixing and matching of trim vs actual cards when the car arrives to build the best set. Seat is in good shape just needs some leather treatment to soften it back up

Front seats will be either ex japan or if i can get my old Blitzen spec seats back. Need the high bolster spicy ones

If you need the puddle lights let me know Nick, I've got them in the RX cards that I've got.

After some lunch and a sit down i got stuck into cleaning. The seats overall were ok. Just a bit dusty and very dry and crusty
I9l20FQ.jpg
VCODqtn.jpg

A soaking in Bowdens orange agent, followed by a detail brush in all the nooks and crannies
Application of Bowdens Leather Love
Layer of Bowdens Leather Guard.

I only took one after pic but theyre back to soft and nice again
ComAJCu.jpg

The door cards in the rear were pretty good. Just needed a good wipe down and scrub. The front door cards were pretty gross tbh. Very dusty on the inside and the contact points needed about 5-6 passes of orange agent and scrubbing to come clean.

But eventually
x2bqI9L.jpg

Just need a car to put them in now lol

Looks good for a bit of effort Barbs! Where’d you pick them up from so soon after starting the hunt?

I’m itching to get down to a pick a part atm!

Jollys pick a part in Geelong. Snapped at the opportunity for local leather. Not cheap to get seats from Japan
