Hi all, I am building a soap box derby style racer for the up and coming Gosford annual Billy Cart Race. Never made one as a kid so thought I would re-claim some of my childhood... and its for charity. Thing is ... now that I am older and have a larger bank roll .... said billy cart is becoming rather high tech and costing me a d!ck load to build. about $200 so far and still have the shell to fibregalss. This seemed to be the same case with the RC car fad that my mates and I went through not long ago .... big $'s hand over fist for replacement parts. I am interested in hearing some other peoples stories of "expensive hobbies" such as archery, models, photography ... etc ... and how much you recon you have spent. I'll post some pics of the racer when its done... Cheers, mOOse.

you're more than welcome to push my subaru down a hill to compete in races. you can pull out the motor (it is a billycart race, afterall) and hide either a pair of midgets or a vietnamese and/or mexican family in there for extra stealth pedal power.

you bring the potato. i bring the disco. :) my expensive hobby are 1:1 model cars. pretty much always was my hobby. Women were also a hobby once, but that became too expensive to maintain, so I've inevitably ditched that one. Sold the ring, bought another car!

drums. the kit itself was cheap (for a drum kit - ~$1100) but anyone can make a cheap kit sound good with new skins not just one, 10 new skins averaging ~$40 each?? and you want to look after them so buy a bag?? nope. try 7 heavy duty bags. sticks cost $20 a pop and all you do is hit things with them. my cymbals are crap and i want new ones. looking at minimum $1000 for a half decent set. plus stands to accommodate said new cymbals. but they are so fun. justified :)

Problem with me is that I'm a "right tool for the job" kind of person so my projects end up costing me way more than it should cause I go and buy a bench drill when I could have just been a little bit more ninja with a hand held... I made a Beer Bong for a mates bucks party which cost me about $60... Thats right! $60 10 bucks for the funnel (extra large with mesh strainer) 5 bucks for the hose clamp and ... 45 smackers for a 1m length of 200psi grade clear irigation piping Just incase :P

The thing was epic .... I also found an old 70's dragster pushbike that I thought I'd do up .... $1000 later and it looked like one of those lowrider bikes you see in rap videos... I grew to big for it and ended up giving it to the kid next door as the cheap Japanese chrome plating went to sh!t and looked like crap. Waste of money .. but fun at the time.
