While I was driving my car today i noticed the water temp gauge was sitting on high (in the red :o ) I pulled over and shut the car down and the temp started dropping. It took about 5 minutes for it to drop back down to normally working temp. I checked all hoses and water, was all fine. Started the car back up to try and get the car back home got all of about 500m and had to pull back over as the temp started rising again. The engine bay doesn't feel overly hot but the temp rises and falls quickly. Any one know what it could be?

Cactus temp sensor maybe? Was the car driving OK otherwise? Were you giving it a trashing or anything?

Are you losing any water out of the header tank and the overflow bottle?

Car hasn't lost any water and there doesn't seem to be any leaks.

Could it be the coolent thermostat?

I'd say the thermostat.
Is the radiator still as bit cool, or any of the pipes?
Rhys,(Buddylove) just had the same problem with his B4 and it was the thermostat.
As Tony Montana would say:
In this country, you gotta make the money first.
Then when you get the money, you get the power.
Then when you get the power, then you get the women.

I'm with Frank. Hot engine + cold radiator = thermostat stuck closed. Or possibly a faulty water pump (doubtful but symptoms are similar).

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Maybe check the relay/fuse for the thermo fan. It failed on an old camry i had, but the car would only overheat when sitting still, it was fine while moving.
If it's broke use a cable tie.

Radiator and all associated pipes were hot as usual. Water pump was replaced at the 100,000km servce so hopefully its not that. Is the thermostat a relatively quick and cheap thing to replace?

Hawks mentioned the fans. Do they come on? Should kick in around halfway on the gauge.

Another +1 for thermostat here.. It's a bitch to get to on the b4, it was a part of the pump assembly from memory..

Do Thermo, then check the temp switch if that not fixyy.. Its not too hard of a job to do that thermostat + your car wont overheat through the roof if your thermo fans fail to cut in at like 100Km/h, in traffic yes but not at those speeds.

if both radiator pipes are hot its not the thermostat. if its your thermostat top pipe will be hot and bottom on will be cold.
