Hi all, Noticed the check engine light flashing at high revs yesterday. I thought this was pinging i couldn't hear any, and the data logging i was doing at the time confirms this also. Also, now the DTC code P0340 Camshaft POS Sensor A Malfunction has been logged. Car is an MY02 B4. I've read some stories of this error being triggered due to a bad battery or altenator. Any way to confirm this? Also read that it comes up if your timing belt is loose and 'flapping around' as revs increase. Is there any possibility it's just a faulty sensor? I don't suppose anyone has had this contribute to pinging at all? Thanks.

Cant see why it would throw a code if the belt was loose. Signal should still be in range. Are you able to read the sensor output signal? ie Oscilloscope or scan tool and display in graph form. This should pick up a faulty output signal. Perhaps reset ecu and see if it comes up again.

thats one of the billion things I have had to replace on my car, was getting a lot of missing/pinging top end and retrieved that error code, replaced the sensor (they arent all that expensive if you dont bother with genuine) and it has been fine since :D

Yeah just change the sensor and all should be good, 2 minute job. Just changed the sensor on my B4. I know now that the Gen 2 sensor works.
If it's broke use a cable tie.

Common problem with B4s or n/a GenIIIs? I struck it once with a Gen1 but it turned out to be the cam sprocket. Went slightly out of phase when the heads were machined (yes, cam timing was spot on!).

i've reset the ecu a couple of times in the last week and it's come back again. don't have an oscilloscope, only an obd2 cable, using romraider and learning view so far. might just get a new sensor and put it in and see how it goes.

Might be worth a try. BTW does roamraider show sensor output? I've never used it.

romraider logger shows the SSM parameters. i haven't looked to see if there's a raw camshaft position sensor output. there is of various other sensors. eblens want $326.40 for a camshaft position sensor :(

Mate just do a WTB thread in heaps of suby forums, rex sensors are probably the same. I know there is someone on rexnet who has some.

I got one of rslc for 20 bucks, comes off a Gen 2, still works though.

it seemed to drive find down low, it was above 4000RPM the engine would stutter and the engine light would come on, I also got a lot of pinging. thats about it really.. I used dads scantool connected it to the OBD2 connecter and checked the log and it had registered the cam shaft position sensor as being faulty, so I replaced it and the problem went away

Mate, I think you should check the timing marks.. As i think your belt has skipped a few teeth, (faulty hydralic tensioner) One tooth may be the cause of the pinging( timing advanced. Then as you have started the car this time it has skipped enough for the cam sensor to pick up a fault. Easy was is to pull off the side cam covers and make sure the cut outs on the cam wheels line up to the marks up the top

I'de be more inclined to start off simple before I looked straight at the timing belt :D Not saying your wrong Lance but its better to get the simple things out of the way first :D Hope its not the timing belt... I hate doing timing belts

did the cam sensor and reset the ECU. no error code as of yet but it still pinged a couple of times, with an ambient temp of 15. the IAM is still at 16 so its not 'badly' pinging but i doubt the sensor has fixed the pinging issue.
