Has or does anyone have any advice for panning shots. I've been doing them a few times now and can never get the right effect. what angle are you supposed to shoot at, am I supposed to be looking for something obvious ? on the track or terrain ?

Hi Will, this is the same info that I sent to you in response to your PM, but though it might be useful to the other budding photographers out there. The composition is nice. I like the subtle interior lighting. I'd say that the light source is too central to the very front of the car, creating an illusion that the remainder of the car is too dark. Try to have the light source directly behind the camera (if you have only one light source) or if you have multiple light sources, one pointing towards the front quarter and the other overing the other front quarter. That way you'll get a nice wash of light over the entire car. Also try cracking the front wheels from being straight. It's a small thing, but it's anice way to show off the wheels and break up the straight angles that comes with shooting cars. The positioning isn't right yet. Get further back, way back. that way you'll still be able to capture some of the background imagery and have more room to creat a better angle on the car. get the car on more of an angle, so that there is not too much focus on just the front end. I notice that you've used the basic "thirds" rule of thumb to offset the car from the centre. this is exactly the right idea. If you want to creat more of a portrait effect, try not centering the car through the middle of the image. Again, you'll be able to achieve this by moving further back. If you've got a tripod, shots like this(dusk or night shots) can look amazing if you go way back, setup the from on the tripod and then do a small time delay on the shutter. It will make the available light available really pop out of the image and help to highlight the lines of the car. All in all, you're progressing pretty well. Just keep taking millions of shots and practice, practice... As for great panning shots, this is a differnet kettle of fish! I've not yet mastered this myself. The key to a great panning shot is the background and the location in which you are actually taking the shot. A backround shot of some of the track, some crowd, some scenery e.t.c. (rather than a wall or a tyre barrier) add to the overall dynamics of the image. It adds personailty or movement to the shot. A big zoom lense helps alot as does an understanding of how to use your shutter priority and exposure settings. The rule of thirds still applies here, I know in the excitement of the moment it's very easy to just try and focus on the car and some of the blur that comes with following the camera, but this just delivers a blocky 2D style image with not much else to look at apart from a wonky shot of a car with some blur around it. A tripod with a spirit level and a swivel mount helps here. You can move the camera on the swivel, removing any up and down shake. In doing so, creating a true pan shot. Setup in a nice location and set the level to the angle that the car is going to travel, not necessarily with the horizon, or pure level, in this instance. Hope that helps a bit.

Hey mate,

Subaru has been pretty generous in his advice giving... trust me i shoot for a living :)

my biggest tip would be to use a telephoto lense ( anything from 50mm upwards..) however i prefer my 70-200mm Canon L series best. However on your 50D your sensor magnifies your lense focal length by x1.6 so 50mm = 85mm...

always go back as far as you can and zoom in as close as possible.. the tele lense will compress the background a lot better throwing it to soft focus otherwise known in the industry as "bokeh" this is a great effect and cause its all in camera it is very valuable indeed :)

as for panning shots... the key is practice... and selective autofocus...

i use a Canon EOS 1D Mark II N now, but before that i had a 550d that i used to shoot speedway on... i found if i chose the centre focus point it stops it from selecting the background and gives you a good lock point...

i also have found that shooting around f8 and shutter speeds of 80-100/sec give for great motion... then after that it comes down to your hand eye co ordination really!!

good luck and keep snapping away mate...

Thanks, I've actually sold the wide now since I don't ever use it. I prefer using my 24-70 which gives some very nice shots. I've been using mostly f16 on infinite zoom doing landscapes, haven't really touched cars for a while its been all work no play.

i know the feeling Will.. all work and no play...

i have been dying to do a shoot of my car... but after a day of shooting pics for the paper i can never really be bothered haha
i guess its like someone who works at KFC... you probably wouldn't go there for dinner lol

Oneday i'll get around to it

i am looking for a 2.8 24-70mm it will fill the big gap that i have in my lens arsenal... i've got a 16-35 2.8 a 50mm 1.4 a 70-200mm 2.8 and a 400mm prime 2.8...

so i've got some gaps happening.....

Nice photo thread :D

I'm a very casual photographer so i'm still learning new tricks when it comes to photoshop :P

I have a tripod but just haven't spent time to go out for long exposure shots...

Did a few adjustments in photoshop of our cars:
