As some of you know, I am looking for a new car. An Outback to be specific.

A few weeks ago I found what looks like a really good car. Blue, low kms, manual, top condish, etc - all for $10k!
Well it started at $15k and within 5 days it had dropped to $10k.

It says the car is in Syd so I emailed the seller and got no reply. Emailed again but still no reply. Figured he had sold the car and just forgotten to take it off. There was no contact number on the ad so email was the only option.

This afternoon i finally got an email from him.
This is what it read;
(The car in question)

Hi and sorry for my late reply,

I'm writing to confirm that the car is still available for sale. The vehicle condition is excellent inside and out with no hidden defects. Engine bay is also extremely clean and tidy and all services are up to date. There is no finance owning and also the car comes with a full service history. There is absolutely nothing to spend.
The price is $10,000 because I want a quick sale.
Excellent condition, very well looked after, regretful sale in need of money.
Let me know if you are interested.

Thank you,
Daniel Dorane

Still sounding like a keen seller i expressed my ongoing interest in the car and explained that i will be travelling to Syd this weekend and would like to take it for a test drive.
This was the reply i got.

Hi Morgan,

I love this car but I can't afford to keep it and I need the money fast so I can pay off some debts.
I want this deal to be as smooth as possible as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and I have very short time at my disposal. I'm a mechanical engineer and now I work for Seat S.A. and I have started a new job in Madrid, Spain so I will handle the transaction from here.
The car is sent at a local warehouse in Townsville and from there will be delivered by a local shipping company. The shipping fee is included in the price so you don't need to pay any extra money. You will have 5 days inspection period, while you'll be able to see and inspect the car before buying it.
I would like to close this deal through eBay because carsales doesn't provide us any purchase protection. We will use eBay Buyer Protection so please check this link in order to see how it works:
http://members.ebay....userid=luc.0490

If you are a serious buyer please email me your full name and address for shipping and also your ebay id in order to move forward.

Kind Regards,
Daniel Dorane

I am no idiot and knew this was a scam as soon as i read the first line. He'll get me to pay securely through Paypal then I'll never see my money, the car, or him again.
Ive seen/heard of many stories where sellers who get caught into these traps (there is an interesting read on RSLC) so Im thinking of having some fun with this guy. Any ideas?! Lol

And just now, I got this email from him (without me replying the last one).

Hi again,

Here are the details of the car if you want to check it
Vehicle Identification Number: jf2bh9kjb3g059551
Engine Number: b705523
Registration Number: YGV085
Rego till Nov 2010

If you decide to go forward with the transaction I will need your ebay user id, full name and shipping address.

Thank you,
Daniel Dorane

Did a quick Revs check and they all match up.
Still doesnt mean the car is his to sell or for sale at all
Pity though. Looks like a car that I'd happily drive around every day!

I guess if you're hoping to gain $10k out of it, $50 isnt too bad. Still makes me wonder how people actually think sending them all that money is a good idea?!

Boring. I can't believe you didn't want to play with this scammer. Mick on RSLC started to send love emails back to the guy... made it hilarious. In the end, the scammer just gave up on him!

Personally I wouldn't hand any money over for a car unless i've seen and driven it, even if I know it's legit. Thats why i'm not a fan off buying cars off ebay

Was working for me before but giving me Error 404 now. Search for 'scam' and for 'titles only' and its the one with the most pages! There are only a few results anyway.

What the hell?! Are CarSales dumb?! (no offence Josh :P) Mmm okay, MAYBE, just MAYBE its a genuine sale but I don't think many people are dumb enough to send money for a CAR that they're yet to see in the flesh...that just reeks dodgey!! Anyway, I hope for your sake Morgan, that it is a genuine sale and you can get yourself an OBK like that for a steal at $10K.

You're right Shiv, it does sound a little off! Im still not in any way prepared to buy a car without properly testing it first.

Hmm sounds like it might be legit then, and he does say that there are 5 days that you can test/inspect the car prior to buying so it wouldn't be buying the car un-seen..... I would only ever proceed with caution on this one
