We've read many reports lately having to do with Toyota's FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe, but we mustn't forget that Subaru will be getting its own version of this new two-door – it is a joint venture, after all. Our spies have captured this obviously Subaru-bodied mule out testing in Death Valley, showing that things are still on track for the "Toyobaru" to come to market in the near future.

Details are still very slim on what Subaru's version of the FT-86 will offer, and contrary to the brand's image, the new coupe may not be available with all-wheel drive. If that's the case, Subaru will have to offer a lot more in the way of styling (and perhaps power) to differentiate it from its Toyota sister. This latest prototype has sprouted a hood scoop not seen on earlier test cars, suggesting that a top-mount intercooler could be underhood, though it's also possible that this is just the result of some WRX/STI parts being used for camouflage purposes.

Toyota is expected to launch its version of the FT-86 in November of 2011, so keep your fingers crossed for Subaru's version to drop around the same time. For now, see a glimpse of what's to come in our high-res gallery of spy shots below.

FT-86 Coupe, developed by Toyota with Subaru, could be used as a starting point for a future Japanese model: a Sedan Coupe.

Presented at the Tokyo Motor Show, in 2009, on concept stage, the FT-86 coupe, developed by Toyota in collaboration with Subaru, could give birth in the future to other models. Pending on release of several Japanese concept, the international press talks about the possibility of launching to a secondary body, rear wheel drive platform.

Rumors are plausible as possible, given the automaker need to cushion production costs, already reduced by working with Subaru. According to unofficial information, it is a coupe sedan, scheduled to appear on the market no earlier than the future FT-86 series coupe mid-career.

The coupe development will mainly depend on the sedan success , sedan being seen as an emergency option, designed to make sales in the event of a failure, of the three-door brother.

Mechanical package will be provided by Subaru, while the engines range will include a petrol boxer, for200 HP, connected to the six reports CVT transmission. For more powerful versions, Toyota will bring the equation of 3.6 liter unit of the current Subaru Outback .

Hybrid variant is not excluded either, Subaru remin to develop over the next three years a hybrid boxer, that will be slightly more efficient than currently proposed Toyota range.

Yes.... we have to buy enough sedans before they'll give us what we want...

could've at least copied Mazda and put reverse doors on the back.

Hi,

I cannot express how disappointed I am that this is a four door variant. Honestly. What's the point? What is it? A WRX? What is the POINT OF THIS CAR NOW THAT IT HAS FOUR DOORS????????????

Cheers,
Nik

As far as i know it will be competing with the Nissan 370Z, as it will be a sports car and it will have a 6 cylinder RWD.

Maybe they are trying to beat the Nissan on practicality.

Hi,

All of which are TWO door.

Honestly. This should be a two door launch, a car specifically designed with an awesome chassis for a TWO DOOR. Not an adapted small sedan with the rear doors deleted.

:(

Cheers,
Nik

P.S. Aek, thank you for making my day at work interesting with all these new threads.

It's been a boring day, apart from my Yiros at lunch. That was good.

its covered in camoflouge you bunch of twits lol how can you possibly tell any thing or make any judgement.

Did you not read above that a sedan variant was a last minute emergency if the coupe fails? Im pretty sure Subaru are not retarded enough to release a slightly different shaped WRX.

Itll be a coupe for sure

Hi Jim,

It depends how you read it;

The coupe development will mainly depend on the sedan success

Nik

"The coupe development will mainly depend on the sedan success , sedan being seen as an emergency option, designed to make sales in the event of a failure, of the three-door brother."

This sentence totally contraticts itself??

Hi,

That's exactly what I thought when I read it, makes no sense. I guess there is still a glimmer of hope that the 3 door will be sooner rather than later?

Cheers,
Nik
