hey , guys my engine has starting making a tapping sound on the right hand side of the engine.. i have had a few suggestions of what it may be , sticking injector , timing belt tensioner, and mayb even the bottom end.

I got the whole top end rebuilt a year ago so im hoping its not something major . the sound started a while ago then went away after i drove from melbs to central coast and back , only just started up again.

here is a quick video with the noise , just wanted to see if anyone else has had this happen ..

cheers ,

what would be a rough price to get that fixed , cost me just under 3 k to get the top end rebuilt ,

shit , well i wouldn't pay 3-4 k to fix a na engine that iv already spent 3k on , turbo conversion might be happening sooner than later , after all

That's generally how it goes. It might well be cheaper then that, But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Cam,

Try pulling plug leads (or injector plugs if easier) off one at a time with the engine idling at operating temp.

If the noise canges with the cylinder drops out it may be a big end.

The links down so I cant hear the vid. Is it a sharp tap or a dull knock (if that make sense????)?

If its to one side, my guess is lifter.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Doesn't sound like bigend to me, sounds like it could be a sticky valve or even a bent valve, but sounds more top end than bottom end I reckon.

Get a big screwdriver out and hold it to your ear and the rocker cover, see if you can hone in on the noise a bit and see what area it's coming from.

I thought about it being a valve, But that sounds way too solid to be a valve.
That and it would run like an absolute dog, If at all. OP hasn't mentioned the loss of his front teeth from it pig rooting.

If its the big end, it can run pretty much the same until it completely packs up.

i unplugged the injectors as jason suggested , the sound stays the same .. i tried to pin point the sound with a screwdriver but couldn't locate it i exactly,

the car still goes as hard as an NA will go , so i haven't lost any power , i'll have to drop it in to the mechanic up the road and get their opinion ..

it remove the cover first and you can see it move when you rev it, sounds like the tensioner, if they changed the belt im only assuming they didnt do the tensioner, pays to check that first your self coz its easily done then saying its a big end...

they did change it, apparently if you don't position it right when you tighten it , it can come loose .. i'll get them to check every thing first and narrow it down .

most places dont change the tensioner and waterpumps and other guides where the belt goes unless you give them the timing kitt... and timing belt tensioner isnt cheap from subaru either...

i spent 3 k getting it all done , when the head gasket was done i got the heads reconditioned new buckets and shims , water pump cam bearings and seals, thermostat , timing belt kit , the parts were the expensive part
