If it drives fine then it certainly isn't valve.

You'll find it will get worse and worse over time. Check the oil pressure. I'm almost positive its a big end.

No.
That is a compression tester for checking each cylinders ability to compress the air fuel mix.

You need an oil pressure tester, and the specs to compare the results. This checks the oil pumps ability to pressurise the oil for the engines lubrication system. A faulty engine bearing would have a larger clearance so more oil would flow through it, lowering the pressure.

You said the noise has come an gone?
This would be more typical of a lifter than a big end.

Cam, is your engine hydraulic valve train??
Its been many moons since Ive seen inside one.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Yeah they're hydraulic, but they don't have lifters, lifters are in push rod motors. And yes in that instance I could understand what you're saying, even though IMO they don't sound quiet the same.

At idle that knock isn't anywhere fast enough to be a valve problem.
Just run it to a mechanic to get the pressure tested, its a 10min job. If it is a big end, you're not going to hurt it any more. Basically like having terminal cancer.

I fact hydraulic engines with lifters do not have to have push rods.

Ford OHC 6cly engines have lifters in the valve end of the rocker arm.
Holden 4cyl have them in the rocker post.
Toyota under the cam bucket.
etc, etc.

I'd be looking at a couple options here.

1) rebuild current motor. $3k ish?
2) s/h motor. getting scarce now, as BHG are a common issue with these. $?
3) STi conversion. booyeah. $$$??? :)
4) sell all and buy a ratrod. hmmmm :D $elenvitybajillionpesos

I vote ratrod!!!!

As soon as she hands it to you, slowly take of your pants, then, while staring her straight in the eyes rub it against the tip of you penis, while continuing your painfully intense gaze whisper to her;

"My eye is watering, this might be a bit hot"

I should just convert to single, right?

I just listened to the noise Cam.

Sounds odd.(as best I can tell over teh interwebz)
Not like a big end and not like a lifter.

Is it coming from directly behind the cam belt cover?

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

i could afford an sti conversion , got approved for a 50k loan but the plan was to sell or trade this in soon on a gen 4 sti , but
buying a rat rod would be an option down the track haha a harley would come first though :P

it could be and throwing the sound towards the back , but if your looking at the engine from the front, just where the intake manifold bolts on, on the right side just down from that is wear its sounds the loudest , im taking it to a mechanic fri arvo hopefully they can shed some light , really hope its nothing major i want to trade it in on that 06 sti

Ditto, Are you thinking cam bearing more then a lobe? (loose bridge? that'd be strange.)

Now that I think about it, that's possible.

Soop, i had a cam cap come loose on me 10k after doing head gaskets... then i found a serv bulletin that said to check and re-tighten cam caps after 10,000 k's after doing clearances.. mine sounded similar and i thought it was big end.. was actually the cam cap bolts hitting the valve cover.. but it was a bit quicker than that...

i still stand by tensioner not being compressed correctly and now its flapping... the sound isn't there on start up from cold untill the car is given a tiny bit of a rev (when the tensioner has been compressed a bit then it bounces.

My tensioner plays up every now and then.

Sounds very much like a big end.

No laughing matter, excellent that it wasn't anything worse.
I remember once that a certain member of the team had 2 or was it 3 plugs loose and doing all sorts of things, hey Dylan ;)
