Alexxx would know. His brother Peter owned a neat little E30.

I too would know, having owned one myself for six years, and having another in the family for longer.

They're good cars and all, but the electronics can be quite fussy, and you'll need to find a supplier of parts and consumables, else its becomes ridiculous. (ten years ago, I was paying $50 for an oil filter... from a BMW dealer parts department. Then another parts supplier i frequented had them for $8 a pop. Genuine BMW. Many other examples too!)

They have a service interval computer which will need resetting. BMW charge $50-$100 for the privilege of plugging in their ECU reader and punching three buttons to reset the service CEL. Or you could buy your own for several hundred dollars...

You'd also need to be besties with your local BMW mechanic, as normally, mechanics charge like a wounded bull on crack. For some reason, they all charge at least double or triple the going rate for a job, just because they see or hear those magical three letters, yet they source their parts pretty much the same price as most other parts.

Stick with a Subaru. Extend the budget slightly, or hunt around some more, and get an STi with Brembos. Trust me, you won't regret it.

thanks mate didnt know any of that , yeah iv been looking at a few places , i have 30k to play with so i wont just buy the first thing i see , id be lucky if i found an 07 sti for 30k though

I too would choose Subaru over BMW, to own.

To borrow, would be the other way around.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Sis had 07 tuned by STi, black, auto, bought it for $35k, sold it for $34k, sold bout April, was a good example, so maybe a slack 07 will go for $32k or less.

Just go a 06 Sti and slap the Brembo's on it.

The 05-06 2.0T is smaller engine then the 07-09 2.5T but the 2litre came with benifits of twin scroll turbo and equal length headers to make more power then the 2.5T plus it's lighter and consumes less petty and the seats are more supportive arond corners.

Although the 2.5T came with a 6MT soo.... <_<

try $5k+.

and that's with secondhand callipers and entry level street pads.

been there, done that. ;)

IMHO Better to invest the $5k into the purchase price, and you'll get the 2.5L motor, six speed box, and other things along with it.

Dunno about this bollocks with 2L making more than a 2.5L. A 2.5L will make the same power (and more) with less effort, load and revs.

A good friend of mine has a Gen4 GTB sedan making 210kw atw when it had a top mount. Now it rocks a front mount, no idea how much power its making now (it needs another tune to make the most of the FMIC) and as is, it's absolutely lunching Evo 8s.

LOL, half the value of the car in brakes?
All good if it see's track work, but if you're driving around the city I reckon you're just stroking ya self.

True, don't need expensive brakes if you're in city traffic alot, even on a freeway...Subaru brakes are just fine.

Oh sorry mate, what I was trying to say was the Brembo's shouldn't be a deal breaker for a buyer who said he/she wants an auto because of Melbourne traffic. Just an assumption that if it's being driven mainly in a city area the standard Subaru brakes on an 06 should be adequate. Had Brembo's on a few cars, Subaru and non-Subaru, they're good, but I wouldn't retro fit them for $5k, unless I was making a track car, $5k is a lot of coke and strippers, that's how you've got to look at these things.

Hope that seems on topic mate.

Thanks,
Nick

Yes, comparing apples with apples 2.5L will outperform a 2.0L. But we are not.

Don't push the 2.0L aside thinking the 2.5L is the thing to buy.

Lets look at some facts:

(04-06) GT liberty tuned by STI
twin scroll turbo
equal length headers
1435Kg
9.8L/100km
5 speed
200KW
343NM

(07-09) GTB Liberty STI
single scroll turbo
unequal length headers
1545kg
10.9L/100km
6 speed
194KW
350Nm
Additional features:
- Brembos
- Hid lights

"twin-scroll turbo design has been shown to increase turbine efficiency by 7-8 percent and result in fuel efficiency improvements as high as 5 percent.

Combine these benefits with a well-engineered tubular equal-length manifold and the design strengths of a twin-scroll approach can pay even bigger dividends. "Equal length" simply refers to the length of the primary exhaust manifold tubes or runners that the cylinder head exhaust ports breath out into, which should ideally be of equal length before merging at a narrow angle at the collector so that the gases flow smoothly together into the turbine inlet. This helps maintain exhaust gas pulse energy, resulting in better boost response and overall higher turbo efficiency."

I think you should perhaps write a song to perhaps get your point across a little better?

Whatever you say lads, I understand a 2.5L will always respond better with mods then a 2.0L but they are very different cars.

Join Liberty.asn, their are alot of gen4 owners and their opinions from going 06-08 will help.

Small factors such as:
SI drive is harder to tune. (also alot more expensive)
05-06 revs higher

that's just a load of hoo haa from the tuners. with opensource (romraider) you can tune anything!

also revving higher doesnt mean its any better

power isn't everything. you need TORQUE.
