as far as fuel consumption goes... on a round trip from Perth to Bunbury (350km) i usually use almost 3/4 of a tank... on the way up i only used just under a quarter of a tank.. when we got home it was just under half.. mind you it was fairly windy today so that would effect the usageAttached File  int1.jpg   303KB   14 downloads a bit

Throttle response was nicer also and when i overtook i could feel a small but noticeable difference...

Seems pretty cost efficient upgrade to grab just a bit more power and less fuel usage. :)
whats the diameter of the pipe you have put on compared to the original?

Cheers guys... Morgan i'll paint it soon... if i dont go the exhaust fitter option :P

its just 65mm DWV pipe from bunnings and a few other fiddly things... all up was about 53bucks i think including a tin of paint... its a simple fit as its the same size as stock... i will do a proper DIY when i'm not struggling lol
i saw an idea on the DIY Gen 3 intake thread and just tried to modify it somewhat...

The biggest problem i had was getting the angle right to the whole in the guard...

with some more fine tuning it will be better...
has a nice intake roar to boot :) but ultimately i am most happy with the fuel econ gains and throttle response....

I actually did this when I first got my car, all I found was extra noise... The problem with it is the stock intake opening, that's restrictive and actually heats up from the radiator

But you see i am not JUST using the stock intake... it doesnt really get that hot... it is cooler than you think because it is always having airflow over it...

if you look at the blue piece that connects to the stock intake... it has a 45 junction from it... this is at the moment just sticking into the whole in the guard.. eventually it will be connected to a pipe in the guard going down to the wheel arch or spotlight vents... what ever is easier...

i'm sure there has to be some sort of venturi effect going on there (sucking air in from the pipe going into the guard) as air passed through the stock intake... and i cant argue with the fuel consumption...

even the Mrs noticed when i over took someone she said what have you done to the car baby?? it feels different hahah

cant argue with that either i guess

lol :P

I think it's the old " Sounds Faster than actually being Faster" effect. Good effort and job though :)

e.g, my Accord Euro sounded like it was running a 10 sec quarter when I did the pod filter on it.. still the same old slow Euro

Good effort but I agree with XXB4XX, may not actually be making more power.

FYI Our BF XR6 work ute makes 2kw extra on the dyno with the airfilter removed and the dyno's cooling fan blowing straight at the intake!

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

guys... where did i say anything about power??

i mentioned throttle response and fuel economoy..

and at higher speeds ( highwasy 110km ok more like 120) with the pipe in the guard and the straight line i did feel like it felt better...

i never once mentioned power guys... just an improvement in its feel :)

just wanted to add that i cracked 500km on a tank of fuel for the FIRST TIME ever with this mod done... very happy indeed i must say :) now i just got to see how much the exhaust guy will charge to make up a mild steel or stainless version... of just paint it if he wants a penny

every subie i've ever had has never really given me 500km plus per tank... i do a lot of city driving and short trips... so this is a great thing for me :) plus i thinks my foot is a tad heavy lol

that was 500km as soon as the light came on... i have never gotten close to 500 even driving around for ages with the light on so i am pretty happy :) Exhaust mods next so i hope that helps even more in terms of mileage... i even had it wound out to 170km today on the way home lol :P shhhhhh but

Good write up mate, different way of doing it :)

Hmmm... If I get below 500km/tank I get worried!

Pfft!!! i get a max of 350km before my fuel light is up, and thats on a good day lol.....only got 450km from the 2.5l n/a from short trips, but on long trips got up around 7-800km/tank

When i dropped her in to get a tune on the new engine, she did about 88km on the dyno/road and emptied a full tank, well over 55 litres anyways (light was up when i picked it up lol)

far out... thats some pretty serious usage on 88km haha i usually get around 350-450 as well... so like i keep saying... 500 is pretty good :) mind you my engine is coming up on 250km lol

yeah foot to the floor in 4th with a buttload of dyno runs does that lol (i was a bit shocked though!)

Im expecting a big drop again in km/tank after the new mods are complete.....hopefully not too much ;)
