Just putting it out there as to if anyone knows the reason for the excessive "crackle", has anyone else had the same problem with note?

Currently has Stainless Steel extractors with a custom 2.25 inch system, unsure of the muffler, and has a 3inch resonated xforce tip

Sorry about the Video quality...

Cheers,

Joe

I had that problem with my old car.

Post a photo of what exhaust tip you have on there.

I had a rolled twin tip on my old RX and it made that same awful noise when the revs dropped down.

Like this:

Changed it to something like this with no rolled edge and I didn't have the problem, it was weird.

Hi,

Was the tip the only thing you changed, Tom? Or was it the whole diff-back section?

Cheers,
Nik

I had the whole cat back exhaust done, with that rolled tip.

And it sounded like the video posted, and the exhaust bloke said he's had that same problem with another NA Subaru and he could only think that the tip was making that noise.

Just changed the tip and it was fine.

Also had a cannon on latter as well and that didn't make that noise either.

The cannon probably sounded the best but I put the oval muffler back on because it looked better.

if its brad new, its basically just metal pipe but once the carbon from the exhaust coats it, the noise will soften... yeah...

The 2.25 inch system was on the car when I got it which is now just over a year and who knows how long before that... I know what you mean though as I experienced it with the 3inch system I also have for this car.. Thanks :)

Hi,

Richo, are you referring to the pipe itself, or the 'stuffing' in the muffler housing?

Cheers,
Nik

Mine didn't correct itself Richo.

It's definitely just the noise of the exhaust gases "fluttering" past the inside of the rolled edge.

I have this too.

I don't have a rolled tip, it's just a 4" cutout of polished stainless steel and I still get that noise.

Do you have stainless extractors?

Exhaust crackle is caused by unburnt fuel going down the exhaust and igniting spontaniously on hot spots in the exhaust as well as when it comes in contact with air. Changing the muffler/tips simply just changes the way you would hear the afterfire. Depending on how a good condition all your sensors are (O2, Knock ect), they can cause the engine to be running lean or rich which either can result in backfire. If you had a slight intake leak, you computer would run rich as a defense mechanism and throw buckets of fuel down the exhuast. Also ignition timing can affect it aswell. If the ignition timing is out for any reason, the mixture could be igniting while the exhaust valve is starting to open ect

There are a myriad of reasons why cars backfire and crackle. Mine makes a loud bang between full boost shifting when your giving it the welly, this is from the car running rich between gearchanges. Works both up the gears and down, if i heel and toe my exhaust sounds like the 4th of July :)

Cool story, Jim.

But if you listen to the video I don't think he's talking about exhaust crackle as such, he's talking about the silly sounding puffs of air coming from the exhaust tip when the revs drop.

Good writeup about exhaust crackle though. :D
