Hey,
I just went out to west head with a mate, by the time i got there after not going under 100km i poped the hood and it was a bit smokey mainly coming from the back right of the engine, sort of below inbetween the fire wall.

Is this likely to be something serious or is it just cause OUTBACKS are not supposed to be pushed that hard?

Cheers,
Steve

Outbacks aren't designed to go over 60...

Perhaps a picture of the area you're talking about would help.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

Outbacks are a fragile beast and don't lend themselves well to being 'pushed'. Edit: Ninjad by Xon.

What did the smoke smell/look like?

It it was smoke it may be an oil leaking onto the exhaust.

Perhaps steam? Leak in the cooling system.

Either way, it needs urgent attention. Even if only to rule out a serious promlem.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

Grab a torch, take plastic motor cover off and have a look, easiest way to see what the problem could be!

I'll add my 2c - CV boot has split/torn and is spraying grease on the exhaust/motor.

2002 Outback - it's gone...

I think we're on different wavelengths to the OP.

My bet also would be either a CV boot, or rocker cover gasket, as a result of abuse.

Take it to a mechanic, and let us know what it was.

Coolant maybe, but last time I did a CV boot it smelt pretty ordinary.

Sweet with a bit of tang? Hahaha it's hard to describe a smell of burning lubricants. Maybe a bit like squashed ants?

Depends if the CV joint itself is trashed or not.

If CV joint is ok... replace boot. Happy days. Should cost $30-$50 at a CV shaft shop if you remove the shaft yourself. Add about $100-$150 for labour at a mechanic.
If CV joint isn't ok (clicking/crunching on turning) it's time for a new shaft. $100-$150 exchange for your old one, and same for labour with mechanic.

If you've been off roading, I don't like your chances of the joint being OK. Have it inspected.
