Hey lads, I have had a few things in mind lately..
1. Sell outback as is -> buy newer turbo car
2. Throw some money into the outback -> engine transplant -> turbo time

Now, I am seriously considering the latter as I do enjoy the outback and think it would be kind of cool with a turbo sitting under the bonnet, also have girlfriends go ahead (very rare).

I know when it comes time to sell the car down the track, that I will not get back the money I put into the vehicle, but that's not the end of the world.

I need as much info as possible, the benefits/advantages etc vs the negatives/downsides..
I do have a bike, and a company car coming, so may be able to afford the car being off the road whilst upgrades are happening.

So basically, I want to know what I need to perform a task like this.
Remember I live in Coffs harbour.

Thanks in advance for advice and help.

Sam...

I've seen a few people come to this crossroad, and seen go either way.

Definitely go with option 1.

Buy a turbo Forester, GT Wagon or WRX wagon if you like the wagon option.

Why?

More reliable, and cheaper in the longrun.

Easier to sell.

Quicker and more convenient.

Less worry.

Cheaper maintenance.

The outback is looking pretty nice, and will sell for a bit of cashola, if you have a company car and bike then you can afford to have no car for a while and hunt down the perfect turbo Suby.

I'm sure most people will say this, just look at Morgz and his swap to GT Foz.

edit: And if you ever heard of a guy called tristan and his H6 GX you will know conversions can be funny and stupidly expensive for fark all gain.

XT ;)

You're a hellavalot closer to Al than alot of us so the resources aren't an issue.

I would lean towards the first option though. Your outback has 100k kms. Plenty of life left in it. Sell for maximum cash and buy factory turbo.

Yeah. I keep chopping and changing my mind on this, last couple of days have been looking on carsales for turbo vehicles around $15k, found a few very nice cars, but would have to sell my car first to do so.
If I was to sell my car, I would be looking at a sedan or hatch.. Rather than a wagon.
Cars I have in mind:
- ~2002 Audi 1.8t
- vw golf turbo
- wrx
- s14 nissan
- s15
Something along those lines, where I would tune it, and might think about very minor mods.

But, as I said, I keep changing my mind. :/

Wo... Don't buy an Audi, resale is a biatch on those, and they're expensive to service.

S14.....dude, maybe 5yrs ago that'd be a cool option, but they're over populated now, and well most people see them as a kids drifter

S15.....(see S14)

VW Golf GTi, nice choice, but for $15000 you'll get a shitty one....and old.

WRX....(see GTi)

Sam, let's get serious, let's just look at Subaru for now, $15k will get you a B4, an okay <MY03 WRX, or a GEN 2 turbo wagon/sedan.

$20k will get you a bit more. Something that you might not need to modify as much, or tune as much, freeing up some cash for the niceties.

My suggestion for you;
Sell Outback
Ride bike
Drive Company car
Save money
Buy decent Turbo car, preferably Subaru (trust me, Nissan is a world of Hurt and Evo is too exxy for you)
Enjoy the splendor of not having to trawl eBay or ImportMonster for elusive parts, cos you have them factory fitted.

What you should do now is ask for suggestions within the $15k-$20k budget from guys on here, as alot of us have driven/owned various makes and models.

I can do 15-20k, I'm just a cheap bastard. 25k is something id be looking into if I can wait a few months, get a bit more savings behind me and get something a lot more decent. But I think youre right. Ride bike and drive company car, save etc blah blah.

Guys, what would be your suggestions for roughly the 20k mark? I would be looking at a more recent vehicle. 2005+ ?

Haha probably! Maybe he's referring to the number plates?

Either way, if this was for sale 4 months ago, it would be sitting in my driveway. I couldnt find a gen4 GT wagon for less than $20k when I was in the market!

I couldn't find a GT wagon 09 or newer when I was looking, and that was in the $35k market.

Sell your Outback...buy Yods' Outback with all the work done mechanically, and finish the aesthetics :)

Why? Because turbocharged Outbacks are BADASS.

If you are happy with an older car, turbo it.

If you want a more modern interior, upgrade.

This is my dilemma ATM.

Love the way my car performs, but interior is lacking and it's gettin' on a bit.

As someone that uses a conversion as a daily, I will say this. I love my car. I know just about everything about it. I'm familiar with all the weird noises it makes, it's flat spots, so on. If I ever sell it, I will probably regret it forever and miss it every day.

Having said that, I hate it. I hate the weird noises it makes. I hate the rattles and shakes it has, and I hate the constant feeling that something's about to break (nothing HAS so far, but the thought is always there).

If I had my time again, would I still do the conversion? Absolutely.
If I got another Liberty would I do it again? Noooooooooo.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

I put up with people from amnesty, red cross and now the cancer council almost daily hounding me!! Throw in the greens, green peace, unhcr, save the forking children and I've well and truly hit my limit for the number of fuckstains wanting me to sign something or give money. Seriously cubts,  :fork: right off.
