Have a read of this mate. This is what I followed when modifying the car. From what I can understand, as the EJ20 is 0.5L less displacement then what the original engine displacement was, hence not requiring an engineering certificate. Just a engine number change. Also, as the EJ20 is a manafacturer fitted motor on the same chassis (Legacy), this just adds to the fact you DONT need to get it engineered, so long as the brakes are upgraded to either the same as what the facotry fitted were on the same model car, or bigger. The link below shows what changes need and dont need to be engineered, and the majority of mods the wagon has, don't need to be done.
The National Code of Practice is what the laws are in clear black and white. I was referred onto that from an engineer as a base model for modifications.

Also, if you wanted to se what other modifications, OTHER then the engine, click on the below link, and that will show you the guidelines for everything.

Not true, Shaz. You've gone from an NA to FI motor (and an EJ20K, not the TT EJ208 the Gen3 Legacys had), therefore the emissions aren't to the spec of an FI Gen3 or an NA Gen3. Ben should have to pass an emissions test to be anywhere near legal on NSW roads, mate. Particle count and noise. If the engineer says he doesn't that's great, however you're leaving yourself open to still be raped by the RMS/HWP as they can put you over the pits and your engineer's cert won't mean shit.

NCOP have NOT been ratified in any state YET. You still go off the RTA/RMS's Code of Light Vehicle Modification.

The engineer I spoke too was faitly adament that if you followed the NCOP regulations, that it is fine.
Also, if you have a look at Section 1.1 "Fitting a manafactuers optional engine together with any associated components as supplied by the manafactuer on the same model vehicle", that was the thing I queried the most. As the Legacy came with a "EJ20" engine number, he assured me that regardless of what generation EJ20 (K, J, EFG) it would still be classed as a manafactuers option engine, and hence not requiring an certifcation. The engine change isn't greater then 120% of the original power output, so i'm guessing thats why he said that it required only an engine number change.
I can understand wanting to get an emissions test regardless, and that shouldn't be an issue as it is running factory computer, injectors and a big cat / muffler combo.
Also, with regard to that brace, I'm also 99% sure that the FI Gen 3's don't run it either.
Cheers,
Shazza

Id be keen to know whether they run this brace aswell!Ben, have a look at B4s and Gen3 Legacys - I'm 99% sure they do not run that brace from the factory as there is not adequate room for a STOCK dump pipe (need min 15mm of clear air all 'round to pass roadworthy/engineer).

You're right about the engine being small enough and an option, however the twin turbo/single turbo/generational changes between the 3 engines means you'll need an emissions test... well, you SHOULD.

Yup that's correct. Its where I mount my GoPro.i think they are under the rh rear of the car in the gen3s, small flat black box.
Hope the fix isn't too costly Ben!
