squealing when applying brakes in reverse

I have an annoying problem with my my01 WRX.
The brakes squeal very loudly (regardless of how lightly/firmly they are applied) when the car is moving backwards. Braking when moving forwards is fine. I have no idea why this is happening, never experienced anything like it on any of my previous vehicles.
Any advice on how to remedy, short of replacing pads and rotors?
thx in advance
Mike
DIY till your fingers bleed or the part breaks. Only then take in to a professional who won't do the work as meticulously as youself

Anything stuck in there? Small stones have been known to wedge themselves up there and make terrible noises!
How old are the pads?

i bought the car 4 weeks ago. Pads look like at least 40% front and rear. Pads and rotors are stock, I have all service receipts from Subaru from previous owner.
If it's a small stone, wouldn't it make noise going forward as well?

it would. If it's a small stone, wouldn't it make noise going forward as well?
the pads may have developed a edge on part of them causing the noise when going backwards but not forwards, i no some of the new commys do it. also, its not something stupid like the pads are low and only just starting to find the wear indercators?

It's actually probably the smallest! Only started a few years ago when a certain other forum became ...unbearable!
There are countless Subaru forums out there ...this is the best one though

Check your brake retainer clips... I had the same prob with my old lib being loose...
this would be where i'd start too.
If there's a stone it there it would most likely make the noise in forward and reverse and probably have left a score mark on the rotor. When you have time, pull the pads out and give them a bit of an inspection to see if there's anything unusual going on down there
It's actually probably the smallest!
but best

yes, they do have some type of 'lip' or 'edge' on the visible side/corner area

Ive thought it might be retaining clips or shims (if the pads came with them), maybe they need anti-squeal compound.

RSLC is good for their knowledge archive. So much info over there but it's a pity the members are too good for anyone else.
OzLiberty is good for a laugh but dead
GTRydaz is dead and not even good for a laugh
OzFoz is actually ok. Quite active, nice enough members, decent parts for sale. Meets and cruises are lacking though. No one talks to you. Everyone seems disinterested...
ClubLib is ok but mainly Gen4 focused
Perth-WRX is localised to Perth WRXs. Don't go on there much but I'm sure there's some useful info.
Rexnuts - same same as other WRX forums. Apparently they all act like tools on cruises as well.
NASIOC, LGT, SLi, UKLegacy, SubaruOutback.org and SubaruForester.org are all great resouces but are international sites. They have Aussie subforums but they're usually pretty dead!
There's heaps more but I don't visit all of them. Scoobymods, WRX.com.au, subaruclub, ausubaru, wrxtuners, clubwrx, subaclub, offroadsubaru, ultimatesubaru, RS25, scoobynet, scoobyenthusiast, iwsti, wrxowners, imprezaworlsd, etc, etc, etc
Now that I think about it, hats off to Subyclub to have taken off so well!
Thing is, people will have their gripes with Subyclub. "It's full of P platers" is one I've heard. Sure, we have a fair few P plate members but it makes sense because we're not focused on one particular Subaru model. People also don't like The General Thread. Fair enough. For many of us though, it's how we've become good mates.
biggers not always best aye morgs,
Unless you're Nik
