I am not one for HIDs unless the headlamp assembly is designed for it.
You would be better off IMO with a good set of plus50 or plus80 standard type globes.

If you are after a certain 'look' from your headlights that only a HID can give then go for it.

the headlights in gen 3 are designed for HID..... the housings, reflectors and bulb covers are all identical between factory hid lights and aus spec halogen globes.....

I'm not so sure about that, there was a massive difference between the au GX lights and the jdm RSK lights (apart from halogen vs HID) which I had

IIRC, the HID was slightly deeper, had motorised level adjustments, different markings on the glass and you could see differences in the reflector.

also the globe itself was ~1.5x the length of a normal one

From what I've seen, Richo is spot on.

I've had standard AUDM Gen3 headlights in my review mirror with HIDs retro fitted and it was very bright.

Then Matt has driven behind me with his JDM HID headlights and they're fine.
