Tricks of the trade

Im sure we have all rounded off the head to a nut or bolt, this is when the brightest words of our dictionaries come out. Grinding the nut or head off works, or you can drill it out. or try chisel it off. But that is messy, and can take hours away from your Subyclub time.
I've talked about these sockets a few times before, but they really are 'ing awesome.
i started with the basic kit, 3/8"- 5/8" (~9mm to 16mm) then later on i got the fill in bits from 8mm to 19mm.
here's a quick demo i did on the wheel lock nuts on the falcon, since i don't have the special key socket with me.
Started with an old dodgy hammer i made when i was a first year, my trusty $10 super cheap breaker bar, and a 27mm socket i either borrowed from work or from dad.
sit the socket over the nut and give it a few good hits.
then it should be a matter of loosing the nut, should come off something like this.
i just threw the nut and socket at the ground and they come apart, sometimes you gotta get tricky with the hammer to break them apart.
and they usually don't do that much damage.
Now if your still not convinced to put these on your weekly shopping list, here is my trophy on how awesome these are.
Cam wheel bolt of my mums old ej22. Sichrome socket set rounded it off, dads specially designed sockets to remove rounded bolts, rounded this bolt more. Busted out my trusty irwin socket remover things, grabbed the 3/4" drive breaker bar with a 1m length of scaffold on it and got it.
My only dislike about these is they use a 3/8" drive socket, WTF iriwin?
i will be purchasing these in the not to distant future.

These are fantastic! I have a cromwell one and find myself using it on subaru timing belts all the time. You don't have to remove the radiator to get a rattle gun in this way

Hi temp copper grease/anti seize like these should be part of every toolbox as it can (should) be used for the following:
- Spark plug threads to prevent stuck spark plugs (anyone here drive a VL?)
- Thermostat and water pump bolts to prevent seized bolts from coolant seepage
- Wheel studs to prevent the coating from galling the thread
- Leading edge of brake pads to prevent brake squeak
- Exhaust and turbo bolts subject to high temps
- Crankshaft nose to prevent the harmonic balancer getting stuck
- Inside edge of brake discs and drums to prevent them sticking to the hubs
Don't use too much as it can get messy, usually just a light smear will be plenty. A small container will last a lifetime.
I use either one of these.

That power bar looks the goods. Although I dont really need it in my application because the engine is already out and stripped. I prefer to leave timing belts to someone with more experience too, I dont trust myself with that sort of thing - get it wrong and you basically need a new engine. Bloody handy for those who do that sort of job though!
Cheers,
Ben
