I was looking at that 1 trillion dollar coin thing Josh.

Its basically like injecting 1 trillion dollars into the economy, but, by minting a platinum coin, it won't affect inflation or the USD. Its a loophole to allow the US to raise their debt ceiling.

TL;DR - USA wants to borrow money, to help them cut spending, but without the negative effects of injecting so much currency into the economy.

But my minting a trillion in one go that surely has to effect the value of the USD, even if it is ever so slightly? I dunno sounds dodgy to me.

Well, technically, it isn't a currency that will affect the economy, because there is no "$1,000,000,000,000.00" coin in circulation.

They basically make the coin, and ship it to Obama. The federal reserve then credits the USA Fund account with $1,000,000,000,000.00. Once that credit is in the Trust fund, Obama then issues $1,000,000,000,000.00 in Bonds, and the coin is then shipped back to the federal reserve, and melted.

Its a loophole that is similar to allowing additional tax revenues. The way the loophole works, is that because the coin technically was never "issued" or "circulated" it doesn't affect the USD, whilst still allowing the US to issue the bonds.

Does that make sense?

Its like the RBA issuing Gillard a bit of paper saying "IOU $1,000,000,000,000.00" then, when she spends it all on bonds, she gives them back the bit of paper, they burn it, and then she repays it back over due course, once the returns from the bonds purchased using the funds flows back into the trust.
