A few weeks ago my Gen2 Outback started to vibrate a little when in Drive but stopped, eg a set of lights.

Shift to Neutral and the vibration is gone.

Car idles smooth in both Park and Drive, no erratic movement of the tacho.

New leads, spark plugs.

No error codes.

New engine / trans mounts.

IACV and TPS both working perfectly, have tested with multimeter.

Car drives perfectly smooth and fuel consumption has not changed.

Transmission fully flushed and operation as normal.

Thoughts?

Was going to add that......

Approx 675 rpm in Drive and 750 rpm in Neutral. Within manufacturers specs.

If you put load on it while stopped, or increase the RPM by a bit, does it make it go away?

Vibration increases with RPM when loaded in Drive while braking.

Does it happen in all temperatures? First thing when cold, and while warm?

May be a torque converter issue.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

May be a torque converter issue.

I was thinking the same. I know little about torque converters bar the basic operation.

When you accelerate off from the lights, the very first split second of acceleration, the car (feels like driveline) vibrates and then all smooth and normal.

If it only happens when the vehicle is accelerating or under load, (guessing a bit here) might be a one way clutch issue on the stator.

If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?

the vibration is also amplified when the a/c is running and there's more load on the motor.

We had a similar problem with our old Magna back in the day.

It ended up being a broken engine mount.

Fine in neutral, but in drive at the stop lights it would vibrate like crazy.

Just another idea. :)

That was my first thought.

Brand new mounts went in with the engine 20K ago. Visually looked them over and they still look mint, but I will undo and jack up the engine to double check.

Try putting it in drive, engine running and bonnet open and see if the engine tilts excessively when you jam on the brakes and give it some throttle.

Check all mounts, Engine and Transmission. I would say torque converter after that process of elimination.

Cheers, more things to eliminate/try.

Yet to do any research, but is the torque coverter a serviceable or replaceable item?

Can be replaced but they are a sealed unit. A specialist can machine them open, rebuild, then weld shut.

I have fitted aftermarket front driveshafts at roughly the same time. Although I dont see how this would be an issue as it vibrates when stationary...

Common problem with aftermarket driveshaft and auto trans, i had them same thing happen.
Replaced the driveshafts, problem went away for a little bit (1 year) but now has come back.

Heaps of people have had the same issue over on http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/

Thanks for the feedback.

Looks like i'll swap the fronts to the rear as the rear are still oem.

Cheers.
