Hey lads,

As some of you know, I've installed a TBE system on my xt forester. I've never owned a turbo subaru with a TD series turbo. I've only ever had VF's.

My question is. Do any of you with aftermarket up-pipes/exhausts hear a fluctuating flutter noise under light throttle as the TD04 is coming on boost?

Just checking it's the boost control solenoid doing it's thing before I start chasing exhaust leaks :P

I drove Ryan's car the other day and I thought I heard the same noise, Not sure.

So xt foz/wrx owners....Assemble!

The only thing I hear is a little bit of induction (standard air box with a direct feed from the guard). No noise from the turbo/watergate (I'm running stock boost). Even running 28psi the other day the only additional noise was the blow off valve purge

Have you got a boost gauge?

Yep. I get a teeny bit of flutter when backing off after very light acceleration.

This is under 40-50% load, Not backing off.

I'm certain it's the exhaust flowing too much causing the wastegate to go crazy trying to regulate the boost. I'll give the wastegate arm a tighten in the morning.

Had a TD turbo for 2 days and it's getting binned. I'll take that VF30 :P

Yeah some flutter after acceleration is to be expected morgz

I suppose it might be the gate struggling/doing its job with the extra flow and your just hearing it as you at less than half throttle but I honestly have never really noticed it.

ive got a vf30 sitting on my dinning room table too :P

I wonder how the VF30 would go on the 2.5?

I wonder if stock injectors and the stock pump could handle it.

Being that the 30 is just a non ball bearing 34, I imagine it would be a sweet match for the 2.5.

Stock injectors are 440, yeah? I believe they (as well as the fuel pump) are good for about 200kw atw. Once you go harder than that, you'll need to start upgrading.

Yeah mine is similar to that to but since its only been since I installed the dump pipe and zorst. Either the gasket hasnt fully sealed me thinks or its just the sound coming through the dump pipe walls a bit.

May be the second one due to it dulling the more ive driven it, due to carbon build up maybe.

So did you get rid of the catted up pipe?

I get it with my conversion occassionally, has to be the right circumstances, which is normally high loads in the mid range on the high boost setting (18pound). Flatten the foot at about 2000rpm, rolling in second after short changing 1st. Turbo spools a lot quicker than normal when it does it, so I assume the wastegate is having problems controlling.

Mine is a VF36 I reckon.

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Ended up changing the pre-load on the wastegate flap so it's a bit tougher to open. The noise i'm hearing is the wastegate flap opening and closing really quickly because it can now pass heaps of exhaust gas without the stock dump pipes restriction.

Only trade off is 0.5 psi of extra boost, Nothing to worry about. AFR's are still pretty rich as I'm still on the stock tune.

My choice dump pipe didn't help the situation either.

Good to hear you got it sorted Cam. Might have to do that to mine, hopefully it solves my same issue.

Dose and Flutter is played like music, certainly cannot be perceived to be a 'problematic' noise...that's chatter.
Sled run's 1bar wastegate pressure, so no chatter...but it doses like a bitch and loves the Flutter (Flutter is the impeller wheel 'chopping' stalled intake air 'cos the I/C pipe is FULL as your Throttle body closes) For teh epic flutterz, your BOV need to be as close to the turbo as possible (or deleted) which isn't actually a very good place for a BOV at all :D
Performance wise, closest poss to TB is best...Sled's will be getting moved, but for now, that glorious sound...
