Lol... never had a mate's arse that close to my ear before... but will remember that... lol...yer i tried listening but the exhaust is a pain to loud, and you think you hear a sound yet its not that sound then you hear another sound and its ya mate farting in your ear...
Need my exhaust to be quieter... strange to hear someone say that, but yeah... I like the power, not the noise.. the normal boxer rumble on idle and take off is enough for me ...

i know this is a different noise. but hey, its a turbo duck/whooping/allsorts noise thread.
I've noticed when I'm at cruising speed, and i buuild up boost slowly, it sounds like theres a large cat under my bonnet screeching at a hive of bumble bees (boxer rumble).
seriously though, its like a screeching/loud high pitched whistle sound coming from the engine bay until I let off the accel. Has anyone heard this before? I know it's probably a boost leak, I orginally thought it was my blow off valve playing funny buggers. I changed it for another one I had around but the noise continued. I unbolted the pipe from the turbo to the Y piece and replaced the gaskets, but no joy. still screeching at me.
Any idea? Could it be the manifold to head? Please say no. lol

I have to be driving slowish (or stopped) then give it heavy throttle, this is what made me believe its a ping. But only some of the time, and at full throttle. Normal driving, acceleration onto a freeway, or even like yesterday doing a u-turn and a fast 0-100 on the freeway - no odd noises. Its intermittent. Showed a mechanic last week (went for a drive, managed to trigger it) and he was stumped, he reckons if it was a ping it should throw a code. Suggested it might be a pulley or heatshield rattling, but my gut still says its a ping lol. I was googling the sound the other day and apparently the new 86's have a mild ping issue too, even without boost.

Construct, buy, borrow boost leak tester, it will tell all!

Back on topic, he did suggest that the A/C compressors can get damaged if they are on and you hit boost a lot, he went through several on his Suby's, so I would definitely check that.

Note to self.... drive with windows down and sunroof open when hitting boost...I just took my boss for a spin in mine - not a mechanic, but he doesn't think its pinging. He loves how it drives haha. Subaru nut from way back. Reckons it just sounds like a bit of turbo noise, or belt slipping, nothing alarming anyway.

Say im flooring it in second on the motorway?
Or driving normally with boost hitting up to half a bar?
As far as i know my primary turbo peaks at 1 bar, it drops up to .3 bar due to vod then gains .1 bar with the secondary.

Migoreng, sounds about right.. pretty sure they peak a bit higher on primary. 15psi VoD then 12psi rings a bell. Never recorded mine on camera, but I am pretty sure that is what I see.
