Hello everyone, My front CV boots are stuffed, especially the passenger side one, the inside of my wheel has big blobs of grease on it!!!! How hard are these to replace and whats the procedure to do it? Ive been looking through my Haynes manual but cant find it anywhere in there. Will i need any specialist tools? Where would i get a hold of the boots? Repco and the like? Would like to avoid Screwbaru if possible. How long does it take? Any help is appreciated muchly :). Cheers guys, Ash

if they make a noise then chances are there f**ked, subaru wreckers should be able to get some with a month or so warrenty (AFAIK if there f**ked they'll make the noise straght away) can get boots from repco i guess, i get mine from a drifeshaft and CV place locally, probably try them. . to remove the CV is a simple process unbolt the wheel, loosen that big nut of 32mm, unbolt ball joint and dissconnect it (14mm for ball joint) and then pop out the pin at the gerabox end and it should all come apart.

if the CV isn't f*cked. Try and get away with just replacing the boot. $30 job vs $250 job.

The CV's are fine its just the boots that are shagged. Does the Shaft have to come out as well to replace the boot? The boot im tlaking about is the one nearest to the brakes. Grease. Im assuming ill need to re-grease the joints when the new boots go on. What type of grease should i use? EDIT: To Soops reply. Its just the boots. How should i go about it?

ah i thought you said previously there making noises my bad ;)

when you get the cv boots they come with grease!

yeah shaft has to come out to replace boot, you'll understand why when you pull it out, each boot is 15-20bucks each IMO get 2 extra 20bucks saves hassle of trying to take care in removing the old boot

They've just got a band on them. Cut the old band off and use a new one. You may need the tool to do it, Repco will probably have one for $25. But you can just as easily use a pair of pliers. When you get it off, you'll see what i mean.

yeah its pretty easy i started writing a DIY for it but its about 20mb cause i never compressed the pics, only basic tools needed, problems you might have wil be trying to "break" the seal on the lock nut and removing a clip from in the cv

Its a good thing to do will save lots of money in the future

So does the shaft have to come out of the gearbox? How about putting on a new one?

I have petrol and matches. Call me... Ash, I you could probably do it with out removing the shaft, PITA though. Shaft comes out easy enough, just knock the pin out. 32mm socket will crack the hub nut. You may need a breaker bar or rattle gun.

Petrol and matches would fix the whole f**kin car. NA EJ22's suck balls.....hard!

So, get off the hub nut, knock out the pin, which is near the gearbox im assuming? then slide out the shaft, snap the strap on the boot, regrease, put the new boot on, slide in shaft put pin in, do up hub nuts farking tight?

will do em soon

you have the pull the green bit that connects to the CV off which allows the boots to slide on and off it has two clips one with locks the green thing on easy as piss to remove and another with holds the bearings on which would be easy with circle piliers (i didnt have the right ones)

one of the messiest jobs known the man kind. for the love of baby jesus, just take it to a mechanic. let him slather up in grease like its a jelly wrestling contest. not you. get them done before you go. and for the record. if you're on the road, and a cv busts, a chip packet (or wine bag, or anything appropriate) and cable ties works wonders to get you by!
