My 95 Liberty at speeds above about 100 KPH vibrates quite badly through the steering wheel, i've had the car for quite a while but being on my l's up until this year i haven't really travelled fast enough to feel the vibration before so its recent to me .I was thinking i should get a wheel balance, any other ideas what i could do to try and find the problem? (The vibration is when driving, not braking)

get a wheel alignment and balance. start with cheap fixes then work your way up.

Have you put any more thought into squeezing some more power out of the engine. Like strapping on one of those intake fans

Yea that was my train of thought, I have checked the front wheels for movement and no unusual noises whilst driving so i don't think it would be wheel bearings. Ill get and alignment and balance on friday and report back after i go for a drive on the F3

Thanks for the help and quick replys

Have you lost a wheel balancing weight on one of your rims?

Under brakes or not?

Edit: Just read it: Sorry.

Align/Balance, tyre wall.

Even before that, jack her up and feel for wobble manually.

Cheers,

Nik

Don't be tardy though, because if it's hub/bearing you want to dead that quick.

Shudder still there, not as bad as before. My dad was with me and he suggested cv shafts could be the cause they are quite loose where they go into the gearbox and the joints themselves

Wow. Don't throw parts at it.

Do you have after market wheels on the car? If they don't have hub centric rings, You will get a slight wobble.

Check your steering components for wear, Loose things will make a slight wobble worse.

Are you 110% sure it's not the road you are driving on? Try that speed on a different road.

Check your tyres for scalloping. A wheel balancer won't pick that up.

One last thing, Check your tyre pressure.

If you don't feel confident in doing these things, Find a good mechanic. :)

Dads a mechanic, I'm mechanically minded.

We have both checked all those things.

cant be 100 percent sure about the road surface cause I've only noticed it on the freeway where im able to get up past speeds of 90.

and nah I've only got genuine Subaru wheels.

I didn't really intend to change the cv shafts yet ill just wait till the boots split or they start getting noisy.

Thanks for the list of things to check, it will help anybody else trying to track down the same problem :D

Buckled or warped wheel? I know when I had my tyres first fitted to my old wheels, despite been balanced, there was still a very noticeable shudder at 100k's.

Yea that could be a possibility, not really sure how to check that other than swaping wheels front to back
