Hi Guys,

My standard size is 205/50r16

Upgrade rim size of choice is: 18" x 7.5

Tyre options: 215/40r18 or 225/35r18

or a complete alternative would be: Rim 17" x 7.5 with 215/40r17

Feedback would be much appreciated.

Advice noted.

What's with all this I read though about keeping your wheel diameter as close as possible to the original? Shouldn't have a variance for more than -/+ 3%?

The options I provided fit well within that range.

The 225/40r18 will increase in total diameter of 4.1%

Perhaps I've become the victim of too much information?

Found some at St George Tyres for $140 each inc. fitting and balancing!

And I've been paying $250 each + fitting and balancing for forking Bridgestone's...

Just keep in mind if you go to the 18" wheels you will probably have to roll your guards.

Also I would say go a 225/40 on the 18"s

Depends on offset and height. I have 18's with untouched guards

I have 18x8.5 +44 on 225/40.

These require coilovers, scrub really badly on stock suspension.

- Rolled rear guards

- Little bit of camber

http://www.willtheyfit.com/

This site gives you an idea of the fitment.

So chose the tire depending on how high the offset is.

Hope this helps.

I'm mostly unsure about tyre size to be honest.

The 225/35r18 will be almost identical in diameter to stock but with a 7.5" rim and 225's it'll make it a little wider.

I'm just thinking what the ride difference would be between a 225/35 and a 215/45?

I recently went from a 17x7 215/45 to a 18x7.5 225/40 and I did notice a difference in ride quality. I would assume going to a 225/35 would be ever worse ride quality.

Ask for feedback then dont listen to ppl that know from personal experience... :sarcastic:

From memory I thought the stock size was 205/55 16?

legally in NSW the outer circumference (wheel & tyre combined) your allowed to go 15mm +/-

Rim width makes hardly any difference to overall diameter to the tyre...

Have never heard a cop pull anyone over for tyres unless they are crazy stretched on fat rims!

RTA: Wheels & Tyres

1. wheel track must not be increased by more than 25mm beyond the maximum specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that vehicle.

2. Where non original axle or suspension components are fitted, the offset of the wheel in relation to the axle or stub axle assembly used shall not be increased by more than 12.5mm each side of the vehicle based on the specifications of the axle components used.

Minor Wheel Changes:

3. Wheels up to 26mm wider than the largest optional wheel recommended by the vehicle manufacturer for the vehicle can be fitted without the need to notify the RTA.

4. The outside diameter of the wheel and tyre combination must be no more than 15mm over the largest diameter wheel and tyre combination specified for the vehicle.

Unless you are running chrome 20's or a Hellastupid Fitment the Police won't hassle you over wheels.

If you buy 18 x 7.5 wheels then you should run 225/40 tyres.
If you buy 17 x 7 wheels then you should run 215/45 tyres.

I am sure most people who have/had a Gen 3 will tell you the same.

Thanks mate. I know it seems that way but I have a funny way of learning and convincing myself. I'm definitely listening to you guys.

I've just done so much research on the topic and I'm getting conflicting information.

From memory I thought the stock size was 205/55 16?

You know what, if you're right then that'll explain a whole lot as I've been trying to keep as close to the same diameter as stock with all my calculations. I'm going to check the sticker on the door. The car definitely has 205/50r16's on it though.

I appreciate all the feeback guys.

225/40 all day long.

If it's a 18x7.5 rim, I doubt it's got a very agressive offset.

You will be fine, Your speedo will be spot on and you won't have to roll. :)
