What type, where, and how much? Any type or brand you'd recommend/not recommend? Anything to watch out for (good or bad)? Any other info you might find useful in this thread.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

My brother got my car done at Premier Tint at Blacktown. Seems good to me. 10 year warranty and paid $225 according to the receipt.

I got darkest legal (35%) done at Solace/Tint-a-Car in Five Dock, NSW in May '08. Paid $345 for it. Would you be willing to go for darker than legal tint? Its both recommended and not recommended :P

Neh not interested in darker than legal. Is Solace/Tint-a-Car the same people? I've just emailed them for a quote (both places)...but $345 is bloody expensive!

I'm pretty sure they are. Not sure if the Solace brand name exists any more. Its been replaced by Tint-a-Car I think....

$345 was about average back at the time I got it done. I've no doubt that prices would have come down since then :)

yeah say most companies will do darker than legal, but insurance companies love that as a loop hole if a claim is put in.. just to ad on to your thread ams, anyone know if this new privacy tint shit is anymore expensive, cheaper anything? i think it looks weird imo

just to add what kurtis said, yes most places will go darker then legal, whether or not they will be able to invoice it for you because of legal purposes is another story. so there goes your warranty. Never never never never buy that cheapy super cheap tint and do a home jobby, sure you might be able to get it right with have no air bubbles but it will go all purpley and look crap "asap bro, beached a's" I paid $235 for a jobbie at coffs which was 35% and $285 35% tint for a place in surfers paradise. both came with those lifetime warranties and have been great so far.

Ive always used Fomula 1 tint on my cars. Lifetime garauntee. 15% allround for me. Same on last car with two insurance claims, never an issue, but they could f**k you if the wanted over it.

I have Solace on my car at the mo, been on there since the car was pretty much new.. about to replace it (got scratched :( no bubbling or peeling at all but and no fade either) so yeah going to go with them again, getting there Midnight express or whatever they call it, will be nearly $400 or so with them removing the tint but I dont mind cos I know it works and I like the warranty BTW Solace = Tint A Car in NSW :D I am using the one in Rosebery

If you want to save a hundred or so dollars, remove the tint yourself. Heat it with a hairdryer and peel it off. Very easy.

My mate’s a tinter and he had some 18% film he got in Japan he wanted to try so that’s what I’ve got on the Legacy. From the outside it looks like normal grey tint but from the inside it’s got a light bronze to it. Not bad. I’ve got 20% Onyx from Solar Tint on Liberty which is the standard grey. I think it’s the perfect darkness albeit darker than legal, I’ve never had any problems with insurance or the law.

My piece of advice is don't get 5% on any windows passengers sit at - yes, this includes the rear seats.

So my car has 35% (the legal limit) on the front and rear windows and the quarter and tailgate have 5% still.

Oh, and I've spent a total of $200 for;
* striping the original tint the previous owner put on
* put tint on all 7 windows
* strip the front windows tint as it had a couple of marks in it
* put on new tint on front windows
* strip the rear passenger windows
* put on new tint on the rear passenger windows

2002 Outback - it's gone...

Care to share where you got such a cheap price?
or are you doing all this yourself?

legally you can't have darker than 35% on a window which is next to a seat with a seat belt.

i had 35% front and 5% rear on the sherpa

I'm not sure Aek, but I *think* the laws differ from state to state. Its a bit of a mess though because cars that comply by Federal legislations, may not necessarily comply with local laws.

Just some practical observations Alex - I use to have all 35% on my Liberty. I went for 22% on the Outback and I think its juuuust right. Not too dark to compromise safety or attract attention. 35% is OKAY too, but nothing more.

pretty sure the no tint (darker that 35%) over windows with a seat belt next to it is a common law in all states
