Hey Guys, Just got home, and can't sleep so thought I'd hit the web to solve my 2009 problems haha. Just wondering if anyone has owned both a Gen I and Gen II Liberty Sedan, or wagon and is there much diff in overall quality? Reason for asking is I'm considering buying a Gen I sedan, good condition, off a mate on the cheap. It's white and I've been dying for a white old school Jap car to go Panda styles on, and I'd love to carve it up with an engine convo more than my pristine '98 baby. The Pro's; CV joints replaced White Cheap Original white mags (cos' they'll be there long.....pfft) Manual (98 is Auto) White Subaru (AWD, reliable...etc) OK-ish engine (convo definite...perhaps B4, probs GC8 Rex) White Well looked after The Cons; Oh wait, it's a Subaru. But i think the gearbox is tiring, is this a blanket prob like the CV's? Any feedback, advice, or flaming would be ace guys, I'll probably buy it anyway, just so I can play with it. Unless an AE86* falls from the sky of course. Nick *Stop Judging Me

So you can run it on 6psi with an rx fuel pump? :P

Sounds like a decent base for a conversion. The only thing that looks like arse on the Gen1 sedans (apart fromt he obvious whole sedan thing) Is that step in the rear quarter panel to accomodate the window line. I cringe everytime i see that. WTF were subaru thinking? :P

Funny, thats my biggest complaint on the gen1 sedans as well!

Quality wise I think the interior of the gen1 is pretty poor compared to later model gen2s, but I guess that's the case on all cars of that age.
Having an older car to work on without doing damage to your daily is a great idea though.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

Gen 1 GX > 5000 Gen 2 GX > 6500... I wouldnt be too fussy. Gen1 is lighter so will go faster, everything from early model WRX's will fit just the same a Gen2. Quality wise, same same. Gen2's have their issues. Which are getting more and more prominant. They are at least 11years old now. Just consider. It will cost you the best part of $5000 to do the conversion to a gen2. While you can more or less drop an RS engine into the Gen1. Once you have the RS engine/loom in the Gen1, you can easily switch the long motor over to a new engine, provided you retain the inlet manifold.

Ignore the guy who drives a boat that depreciates by the hour..........He has no idea at all. :sarcastic: Gen 2 is 15kg lighter than the Gen 1, I've had both (actually a 91 Legacy wagon) & mine when it was auto......no comparison, Gen 2 all the way.

Haha, Not my mates. Just quiet a few people that have done it. Few mods mine should be good for a low 13 high 12 second pass. Depending if I can drive it that well. Thats with about $3500-4000 worth of mods. Thats purely from what i've seen others do though so who knows.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Still undecided, I can purchase the GEN I GX, pour a wad into it over the next 2yrs and have a fast track car OR keep the GEN II for the time being, hand it over in a couple of months and go car less for 2yrs and purchase a new STi. Right now the latter is looking the best, spoke to my mate, he has ideas of eventually converting to the diesel Boxer when it comes out, and to make it track, as he's already got a GEN II with WRX conversion, only if i don't buy it of course. As both builds would take some time, I'm just going to sit this out for a bit and see what the plans are a bit later. And for the record, I personally believe GEN I > GEN II, sedan anyway, GEN II wags are the bomb-diggity. Nick
