Did not know about the funding thing.
I'm not going to pretend to care about the sport but it is always nice for any team representing the country to do well.

Whilst they may not progress, Australia has a different strategy and tactic to that of European and South American teams. Ones that foreign teams are not used to. That is why we progressed to the Round of 16 in the 2006 World Cup beating Japan 3-1 and drawing against Croatia 2-2 and only coping a mild loss to Brazil, 2-0.

 

We may not make it to the next round this time, however dark horse teams have been known to surprise the world in the past. We are gonna be slaughtered by Spain whether we like it or not, but I am not sure about the Netherlands and Chile. Bring on Saturday mornings game!

 

I'll also be up to watch the opening match between Brazil and Croatia on Friday morning, and will be watching Portugal take on Germany next week on Tuesday morning. Let the sleepless nights begin! I've been waiting for this for two years!

the way the tickets system worked is you go into a pot to "win" tickets for any game. We entered to follow a team throughout the tournament (excluding the final) which is seven games. if the team you "follow" gets knocked out you're tickets transfer through to the team that knocked them out.

 

We entered heaps of times under different names for lots of different countries as we obviously really wanted to go and also figured we'd have more chance of winning tickets to see a lesser followed/supported country. The country we won tickets for was Czech Republic (who were ranked 5th in the world in 2006) and since they went out in the group stage our tickets transferred to Italy by default.

 

What was funny is the name of the "person" who won the tickets was one of the fake ones, James B Yamum. In order to pick up the tickets you needed to provide a passport with your details as authentication so we had to make a fake passport page and add it to my other mates passport with a his picture and name changed to "James Bangs Yamum". He was even wearing sunglasses in the picture but they didn't pull him up on it and we got the tickets. The worse part was you had to pick the tickets up in Germany so we didn't even know if we'd be able to see any games until we were over there

man it was a crazy trip. we didn't book any accommodation or anything like that either, just winged it the whole time. We bought some little tents and just squatted on ovals and in parks when we could or slept in bus shelters and train stations. we had proper beds for maybe 6 nights over 5 weeks haha. fork i drank a lot of beers.
