Interesting. I'd love to see how Pep Guardiola goes about spinning things around to get them back at the top. He is such a top manager and is doing wonders in every team he seems to manage.
I heard about that but haven't really looked into it.

Depends on what they do with it I guess. I'm cautiously optimistic.

on the surface yeah sure, people can watch it via a streaming service, possibly even pay per view but i hear that most most likely though is that you need to sign up for fetch on their basic package and then add the epl pack on top. hopefully everyone realises that the basic fetch package starts at $70 a month (up to $115 for the top package) while foxtel now starts at $25 month (or for $25 extra Sports plus which included all a-league and epl for $50 a month TOTAL).
in my mind its a loss loss for football fans and football coverage in Australia. while i see how some people don't want to subscribe to foxtel, i get that its expensive, this new deal doesn't help football fans any further, and in my opinion this is why..
many people already have foxtel for the amount of football they have but this is about to change, and really has been changing for a while. so 2 years ago, as a football fan i could get fox and a small extra charge, i think $8 a month had setanta sports added. that gave me epl, fa cup, league cup, a-league, ffa cup, champions league, uefa cup, euro qualifiers and finals, world cup qualifiers and finals, bundesliga, seria a, super liga, la liga, mls, copa america, eredivisie, all socceroos games, w-league + other smaller leagues on Eurosports or Setanta.
Personally there is now there is a situation where i have to choose to continue paying for fox or go with fetch. basically i need both now if i want epl and a-league, like a lot of football fans out there, thats a hard decision. so for me, i'll probably go with both as football is a religion and i watch it all so i'm worse off for buying both now which sucks. some people will be like me and do both but there will be lots of people who will choose one over the other. if they go fetch then they get their epl fix but no a-league who i think will be the biggest loser in this. more people sign up for foxsport to watch EPL then they do a-league. there is also anti foxtel sentiment so i see people leaving in droves. if people stop subscribing to fox and go fetch for epl then the a-league will lose exposure which is not good. they will also have a situation where suddenly they aren't on the one stop location for football so the need for fox to pay super money to keep tv rights to the a-league lessens. it puts the a-league in a situation where they need a tv deal more than a tv provider needs them which equals less money. with clubs already struggling to be commercially viable can they operate with less tv revenue? anyway that aside..
So now EPL is on Fetch, A-League, FFA Cup, Socceroos on Foxsports, Bundesliga, La Liga, Seria A etc on BeIN Sports + a bunch of others on ESPN, Eurosports and a handful on SBS HD. To get the same amount of football intake will cost A LOT MORE today than it did in the past. even if went say just Fetch, i'd probably also sign up to netflix for extra programming so while its still cheaper i get a lot less for my money.
Maybe some people don't care and only want EPL so are happy to just have that but those who live to consume football content and are currently doing it all via fox and BeIN we're now worse off.

yeah if there was a league pass setup like the nba have where i could pay a reasonable one off price per epl season I would take it up. But given I can stream the majority of games in HD no issues and the rest in SD I'll stick with that over exorbitant monthly costs.

from a purely EPL availability point of view it makes watching the league easier but i think you're all missing the big picture.

yeah i kinda glossed over your wall of text. I don't watch anywhere near as much sport as you but I see what you mean! Already I think $70/mo is ridiculous for tv but to pay that + extra for epl, and then not even have access to all the other leagues is exorbitant, I don't know how you stomach that much.
In other news I'll be at the socceroos world cup qualifier this month vs kyrgyzstan

Simon is a machine! Sydney FC is back on top, so far undefeated.
Lets be honest here, The Ref handed Sydney that game on a silver platter.

I can see Optus selling back a handful of games to Foxtel to be shown with a delay
I am however struggling to see how Foxtel managed to lose 3 yrs of rights for $50m. Especially as the seemed to be buying the rights to everything else, which I'm a big fan of.
I have no problem paying the $80 a month(All channels + HD) for Foxtel as it has all the sport I watch + the rest of the family gets a bit out of it as well.
Now I'm not a massive EPL but I do like to watch Arsenal's games every week, preferably live, if I can stay awake lol. But there is no way I would want to pay extra just to watch that one game a week.
And from the sounds of it Optus will introduce the EPL as a streaming service which will hinder a lot of potential customers as
1. The optus mobile network is shit, plenty of people i know cant get optus reception inside there house
2. Alot of people are still on ADSL/ADSL2 and will have issues with the speeds required to stream HD
3. Alot of people have capped data plans

I stayed up to watch Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid and then found out all the sports channels are showing the EPL games. So I watched the Southampton vs Chelsea match instead.
United are on tonight.
