Worst part with the GC conversion is you can't tune the factory ecu. Obviously there are other ways. But yeah. Annoying :)

but they respond much better to bolt on mods than GD.

Oh yeah, true.

But surely there's only so far you can go with bolt ons?

$7k comfortable if GC8 cut

$4k cut + all parts

$1500k for Services and extras

$1500k for Tuning shit and random extras..

mine has set me back about $6k after selling all the oldstuff.

Loom for GC8 is doable yourself.. best bet would be to get a Gen2 RX Engine loom and splice it all before hand.

your car is funny.. im not sure what it would have so that would be a good idea to make things more standard for later troubleshooting.

i recently found a new ECU option for pre 99 cars..

ESL daughter boards..

I might ditch my PFC and go back to this... or atleast get this as a secondary option because Factory ECU is handy for troubleshooting codes etc

The conversion is easy.. its the extras you do after that really cost $$$

Mine:

3in Turbo back Stainless EX with Magnaflow Muff.... $900

Apexi PFC $650 (Good price) + Tuning ~$600 to start

Rebuilt Brakes and Rotors + Pads to slow me down $500

New intake + 100

EDIT: oh and i did HD Exceedy

New rear end hubs etc

My Cut was actually pretty neat so there was a fair bit i sold off to pay for things

but I must say i probably had one of the easier / hassle free conversions here.

car was ready for the work with no outstanding issues previously

and i had planned this meticulously and had a fairly firm budget with no expected power rating other than standard GC8 STI figures.

if you go hunting figures.. your going to double the budget!

Certainly wont be hunting figures. Im sure GC8 power will be/is 1000000x better than NA 2.2 SOHC powah. You only did the hubs because one was seized yeah?

honestly knowing what i know now.. $5k budget could get you running a V3/4 STi

but $7k is ideal.. this gets you everything done all at once and reliable with all the things you really need.. (Clutch, 100k service, etc etc.)

To put it simply. You won't be unhappy with a v3/v4

I haven't done a power upgrade in the 3 or so years of owning mine!

No doubt the market will have changed in 2.5 years so maybe a v7 will be more cost efficient but atm im thinking v3/4

Keeping the Engine/running gear in the same era does keep things simpler..

Going V7 is probably an AMAUTO job..

I would hate to troubleshoot a home job V7 conversion

Take Vice's Conversion.. half of Melbourne wont touch it.. its TOOO custom haha

in their defence.. where would you start? at what point are you re-inventing the wheel to find what could be a simple wiring issue?

remember the early engines are still a good engine, also having less Emission crap makes things easier IMO

not saying a V7 > is not a good choice.. just i think it limits the amount you could comfortable do yourself and have a car you can work on yourself.

My plan is to go 2.5 shortblock eventually but in all honestly.. as it stands.. its plenty quick enough :)

Only reason I'd go gd would be a 6 speed and the other goodies like brembos. So not overly likely to happen
