I actually love what it's replaced. I love xbmc. But it takes a fair bit of knowledge and coding to set it up real good, which I struggle with.

Also it's less than 1/4 the size and makes no hdd noise or fan noise

Yurp.

I just wanted something that would work.

Also when I first plugged mine into the internet it did a huge update (i'm talking, 45min-1hour worth of update). Not sure if yours did or not.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Not really. They are similar but very different at the same time.

If you live in the apple world and get all your stuff through itunes then get an Apple TV. For everyone else buy a WDTV, much better.

What about if I download movies and have them stored on an external hard drive? What would be the best option for me? I'd like to get my computer connected to my TV so I can stream music as well.

Actually, I'm pretty sure my iMac and TV is connected to my home network; I just have to adjust the permissions so that I can access my computer via the TV. That would work too, wouldn't it?

Apple TV won't play movies or tv that aren't listed in an itunes library somewhere (either in the device or from a computer).

The WDTV live will play anything anywhere. From a network share, usb stick, external hard drive, internet etc. That was one of the big selling points for me.

Ugh i could ramble on for forking days about this stuff.

Inside the Netflix app? I'm not entirely sure but it seems to have stepped up to HD a few times while watching it without me telling it to so I must be doing something right.
