Some random N/A Gen 3's had OBD2, but it is very limited in what sensors you can read. Gen 4 is when they all got OBD2 unfortunately. SSM scanners are stupid expensive when I was looking at them.
so how do i go about reading codes then?
There is a thread in the electrical section that explains how to read the codes off the check engine light. Might even be a sticky.
