definate answer on obd, obd2 or ssm !! needed

hey everyone

Ok i have a 96-98 subaru outback ej25 dohc auto .

I have tried a elm327 scanner and it didnt work .

So all i need is a definate answer on what this car is no other forums have a straight answer

Obd or obd 2 or only ssm ?? And how can i gl about getting the right scanner for myself

Will be ssm. We didnt get OBD2 properly till the gen 4 i believe. Good luck trying to find an SSM scanner unfortunately

Some random N/A Gen 3's had OBD2, but it is very limited in what sensors you can read. Gen 4 is when they all got OBD2 unfortunately. SSM scanners are stupid expensive when I was looking at them.

There is a thread in the electrical section that explains how to read the codes off the check engine light. Might even be a sticky.

Connect the black plugs under the dash together and count the flashes

Forgot to mention i havnt got any cel at all so would it still show anything up if it was an 02 sensor on its way out ??

I've had codes logged that haven't brought up the light

Aren't the subarus with the front AND rear sensors on the cat converter the proper obd2? My outback only has a front O2 sensor on the car, only SSM work in it..
