Just bought this Outback and the key with the FOB & Buttons in it is falling apart and held together with sticky tape. The remote function doesn't function anyway but I was wondering if firstly I could just get a new case for it that was a little more ergonomic - even just some cheap eBay thing that someone has actually used successfully?

Secondly... can I simply buy another battery for this thing with the hope of getting the remote function to work again?

Hi,

Your key like mine is electronically recorded inside your ECU. You will need to remove the kinda retangualish piece of crystal plastic thing inside it. That will be your transponder chip and insert it into the new key. Then and only then will it work.

Subaru can supply a new key and encode the key into your ecu as well but this is the more expensive option. A keysmith can do it as well for a fee usually between 100 - 300. Unless you are lucky like me and have a key copying device then yea you will have to pull that plastic transponder out and electronics and put it in the new key.

Cheers,

Will

If the insides of your key are ok, supercheap sells the replacement cases. You just swap out the inside bits and the key

lol..mine looks pretty much the same. The remote still works. It was okay when I bought my car a year ago. I really need to visit Subaru spare parts to order a new rubber case

Of course, buy a new battery and see what happens.

This is relevant to my interests. My key is meant to have keyless entry but obviously has been damaged by previous owners so is just an empty shell. Im guessing id have to go to Subaru to get a replacement key? There are 4 numbers on the key so im guessing that has something to do with security or linking the key to the keyless entry

Usually the numbers are related to the key pattern itself

Check the inside of your car. If your ecu is one of the immobilised ecu's then you probably have your immobiliser disabled by having the key fob sticky taped to the inside of your key barrel area or driver side area. Get it out, get a new key off ebay put the immobiliser back into the replacement key and get the ecu immobliser working right.

Thank you. Last time I was looking for a replacement, the cheapest I could find was $30.

I don't think the gen 2 has that feature. I just use the spare key without the button thing.

One thing I have noticed is I can remove the key part as well, so wouldn't I just be able to buy a new fob and swap all the parts over instead of having to get the key cut?

SOrry for hijacking, but I think it's a decent question and in the right spot.

I am aware that Heath will probably need his replaced anyway, but for others that might just need the fob.

Tys does. If there's a litre grey thing in the courtesy light it's got it

I assume the spare keys still have the FOB (chip?), just not the remote?

Thanks for the info, interesting discussion.

Yeah Gen 2's got crappy IR remote locking. Only works when you're already at the door :P

Reprogramming the transponder is easy and there are DIY's around the internet. Screw paying $300 for Subaru to do it. I have done it to my XT after I installed a new BCM. Took me 10 seconds.
