Driving along the freeway to work today my auto decided to just free rev in "DRIVE". I reved it, it went to redline and then banged into gear. A few hundred meters down the road it drops out again and now wont engage 3rd or 4th (drive). 1st, 2nd and reverse work fine but it sucked having to drive the remaining 15kms to work in 2nd @ 40km/h. Last few days i noticed a little bit of flare between gears except 1st to 2nd and in Drive when you put your foot down lightly in drive above 80km/h, (not punching it) it would rev up about 500 rpm before engaing again. Im at work now so havent checked the fluid, will do in the morning, but checked it about a month ago and it was good. No leaks. Is my Auto stuffed? Approx 215,000kms on it and i dont drive it hard. Thoughts please. (Yes I know its a good time for a manual conversion)

You might wanna drain the fluid and replace the filter. If you can check the valve body for debris. Make sure all the vacuum lines are connected/in good order. Inspect the clutch pack for wear. Thats what'd i'd be doing, and in that order. Regardless of what other people will say about manual conversions. This might be a good time to beef up the auto a bit. It'd be a bit different and because the engine always has load on it, the turbo will be more responsive. I reckon look into a shift kit and high stall converter. See what happens. EDIT: Belts, you mean the bands? :P Easy done, externally there's a wee adjustment knob on top of the gearbox on the right hand side (looking from the front of the car) you'll need a 17mm and 19mm spanner from memory. 17mm to loosen the lock nut, and the 19mm to adjust the bands. You do so by turning the adjustment nut to the left. But don't go silly its only very small incriments. Then take the car for a run and re-adjust as needed.

Thanks for the ideas. Just checked fluid, its full, albeit a tad brown and a faint burnt smell.

Mmm yeah, replace it. It's overheated. Have you got an oil cooler fitted? I would seriously be pulling it apart to find out why thats happened. If you drive as sedately as you say, that shouldn't have happened.

It has a cooler fitted. I dont drive like a grandma, but i dont thrash the life out of it. A quick squirt now and then, but cruise alot also.

Cruising shouldn't hurt it. Somethings busted. Shift kit, clutch pack, high stall. win.

Manual. Win :D Try replacing fluid and tightening the bands before anything else IMO. No need to jump to ridiculous conclusions when it could be something very simple.

I would have gone to the kitchen, collected a brown bag, dropped my dacks, pinched off a loaf in said bag, done up dacks, stickytaped bag, placed bag in envelope, and mailed it right to your face for being such a tool.

It's ok, sometimes when we herp, we also derp.

Another 50 min drive @ 40kms to drop the car off at the trans place. They will inspect it tomorrow and then ill know for sure. The good thing though was that the guy who runs the place owns a GT Foz which he has just converted to STi manual. He will do a conversion for me depending on availabilty on parts and estimates it to be no more than a rebuilt auto. Will know more in the next few days.

Luke, from what Marks reported it sounds a bit terminal. Not unfixable though.

Just need to blank out the gear indicator in the cluster which is simple. Only trim i need is console gear surround which yes i will source from one of the wreckers here. In an hour on the forums i already have almost everything i need. :D Just chasing 4.44 box now.

Welcome to the world of manual trans Mark! Sorry to hear that your auto died, but extra coolness for the manual conversion! 6spd or 5spd?

Hey my last Subie was manual less than a year ago!

For my needs a 5 speed will suffice nicely.
