So after getting the car serviced the other week and to get a general once over, the mechanic told me that the rear diff is in bad shape and will need replacing. They gave me a quote for roughly 1600 for a refurbished rear diff fitted. Seemed a little steep, so I contacted Ben at Ichiban and he said they have plenty of rear diffs in stock. My question is how big of an ordeal is it to replace a rear diff on a Legacy and should I even attempt it or just avoid the hassle and get someone else to install it?

Thanks

Undo tail shaft, undo cradle, undo rear mount bolts, pretty much drop diff out and cvs will "fall off"

Then reverse order.

It's like 12 bolts.

Its a manual, Rev C i think so 2000'ish. Couldn't find a build date stamp on it and it doesn't have the original oil cap to verify.

I'm lead to believe its a 2001? Well at least thats what the rego papers and the guy I bought it off told me. But from what you've all said it doesn't sound like as daunting a task as what I thought it would be.

I have single pegger 4:11 rotting away if it suits your ratio....prob not but who knows. If it turns out you don't have a JDM box/diff and u need something to get you by, you can have it.

Thanks man! Will have to give Ben a call this week with my VIN or trans model number and find out what ratio it is and go from there.

Existing diff should have a sticker/plate you should be able to see from the back of the car. This will have your ratio on it. Failing that, use the gearbox code. Never use the VIN for gearboxes as the gearbox may have already been swapped out before.

Will have to have a look under the back of the car this arvo after work. What about using the transmission code off of the build plate?

It will be a 4.44 . You could get away with using a Aussie Outback Auto diff. (Non LSD). TP code sprayed on top of diff . Its MY01- If revision C . Look at the build plate. If you put the Vin number or pm me It I can look at the build sheet of the car and let you know from factory what diff it was supplied with.

PM sent, appreciate it!

Only use the code of the build plate if it matches the gearbox.

Like Reevsy said, who knows what box is in it!

Well to my knowledge it should be what came from factory? but yeah probably have to have a look under the car to confirm

There is a white sticker with the gearbox code on the gearbox around where the starter motor is. Only use what is either on the diff or gearbox.

Hi BOSS,

You wouldn't happen to have drive shafts for a Gen 3 GTB would you ?
