I was recently having a chat to a few mates and was thinking about things that will probably be of interest to SubyClub but no one had the balls or technical know how to give it a go.

I was keen to put a Gen 3 STI 2.5L MT cluster into my B4 2.0L Turbo which required a bit work cable switching ( all well and good until I quickly lost interest ) Cluster is still sitting here and my B4 one is back in the car. Then I was thinking of modding this STI cluster into a B4 dark faced STI cluster. They already have these in JAPAN but it would be cool to make a custom one.

I don't want to break this one yet, so I'm giving another spare cluster a dummy run. My dummy is a Gen 2 cluster. My plan for this cluster is to augment the back to make it a brighter faced cluster.

Perhaps digitize the RPM, SPeedo with small LCD's running in parallel with the needles. Create a custom front face ( hopefully with Adam's help ) with custom Subyclub logo, if I can get permission from our Admins and Paul. The custom subyclub logo on the face will have a back light like the B4 face.

This is where I am at. Awaiting in the mail some calibration equipment before I start attacking the tacho and speedo.

I wouldn't mind getting some feedback as I go along on suggested improvements electronically and aesthetics. ( Aesthetically im not good. But I can make things work ahahahaha )

With regards to lighting it someone in the US used LED strips or it might have been cold cathodes to get a perfect even light. Just some ideas

I am using cold cathode fluro tubes for face numbers, red ring will be bulbs's and the increments on the tacho and speedo will be LEDs.

The circuit will a delayed light up sequence, I will try get it to follow the B4 lighting sequence. Needles-> ring -> numbers.

So far I haven't thought about how you would do a sweep but I'm still thinking about it.

Only way i can think would be to find out the voltage of say 220km/redline and then on startup raise then lower the voltage to that amount

Yea, the sweep is simply a variable voltage feed, say 0 to 5 volts or more likely 12 volts. Wouldn't be hard to figure it out and then find a small PLC or IC chip that will emulate it. Maybe find out how the gen 4s do it?

MY00 Red RX, a nice daily that was sold off once the B4 became reliable...
MY02 Blue B4, aka 'The Project' - v8 JDM STi engine package and assorted other 'goodies' - Sold, then bought back for parts. Stripped and crushed.
MY03 Blue RX, the newer old daily, pretty well more B4 than RX now... In the process of being converted to the track toy... Watch this space!
MY02 Silver Wagon, H6 conversion, full blue/black leather and almost full black interior to go with it.
MY03 White/Silver H6 Outback, donor car for silver waghoon.
MY97 Silver RX, acquired to become track car, but plans changed. To be stripped and scrapped in time.

Basically. Might have to do some trimming to accommodate the inverter on the back

Jim the Jdm rsks came with blackout clusters. The cluster loom is different tho so you will have to match the new plugs

Rev A-C and D-E have different C plugs. D has 18 pin C plug and A-C has 14. Easiest thing to do would be depin your current harness and repin it to B4 spec assuming you have the right plugs

The A-C Black out cluster also came with 2 plugs Small 14 med 16 and large 30 pins.

The D-E Black out cluster also came with 2 plugs Small (now) 18 med 16 and large 30 pins.

The AUDM Gen 3 RX Rev A-E have different plugs altogether.

Rev A-B didn't have the blackout cluster, that came in about 200-2001. Mine's a '99 Rev A. Has 3 green plugs i think.

rkenichi i think it is took at look at that one. The Tommy Kaira one is alot easier to make than you think, and to me its hideous.

I have thought about it and taken a look at what it would take to build one and it is doable. But really do you want to loose your speedo needle for a digital number? Aesthetics is not really there.
